...people. while I don't like stereotypes but here I refer to Filipinos. I work with, worship with and actually have quite a few friendships, but overwhelmingly, with those I associate, they will take medical advice from a white painter over that of a black doctor. Guess who their favorite NBA players are? You guessed right Jokic, Luka and AR....see a pattern? And of course they are desperate to suggest that Luka is the reason the Lakers were not in the play-in tourney this year, of course in an attempt elevate Luka over Lebron.
I am trying to understand this propensity of non-white cultures to fall prostrate before their former ensalvers....moverover the apparent dislike/ disdain for African descendants is palpable..I am honestly seeking understanding here. Where I live there are lots of Haitians and Filipinos.....and the disdain for the Haitians is well known. Not gonna lie, it bothers me. One theory is that its all about money...ie they try to associate with who they feel can improve their financial circumstances? never mind they come to work in country that is run by Afro Caribbean people. They are largely employed by the private sector though...large resorts and high end villas mosty owned by white folk.
I understand that it is an uncomfortable conversation but I had an interaction this morning a Fiulipino barista who I think is a good guy but the conversation was about the NBA and this guy was just glorifying the white players and trying to downplay some of the black stars. I see the same sort of deference to white folks and mere tolerance of black folk in the corporate space too.
