Ska did not develop from calypso and mento. Ska is the baby of American music of the late 40s into the 50s. Listen to songs by Louis Jordan (GI Jive, Show me how to milk that cow), Roscoe Gordon, Fats Dominio, etc., and you will see where Ska, which birthed Rock Steady and Reggae came from. Reggae which came into being in1968 had some elements of mento. I would say the first Reggae song I heard was "Nana" by the Slickers. Some say "Nanny Goat", Larry Marshall but I recall hearing Nana first on the radio just before going back to school in September of 1968. If you listen to some Rocksteady songs of earlier 1968 namely "Baby Why", Cables, "Thats Life", Delano Stewart, and "Love this little Girl of Mine", Eric "Monty" Morris you will hear elements of what later in the year became Reggae.
