A video posted on YouTube features the lifestyle of Darren Sammy, encompassing his life’s journey from poor, obscure boy from an unknown island who through hard work, discipline, a motivational father who sold his fishing boat to assist Sammy in his career and with sheer resilience grew up to become not only West Indies captain but led West Indies to two world cup championships. It also highlighted the fact that Sammy may not have been the most talented as many other players on the team, which was vociferously reinforced by fans and sports media around the region but where he lacked in talented he made up in his discipline, hardworking abilities, leadership abilities and a never give up attitude. I guess I have renewed respect for Sammy as he represents many youths growing up in the region who loves the sport of cricket and just looking for an opportunity to shine. That’s why now that he is coach of the West Indies team, he should not allow himself to influenced by certain islands but be broad minded and objective by looking for the most talented players in the region, regardless of island of origin.
