Sir Clive calls decision to pick Chase as WI Test captain 'odd'
WEST Indies legend Sir Clive Lloyd said he was surprised by the decision to name Roston Chase as the new captain of the regional Test team.Chase was named as the new skipper on May 16 as the replacement for Kraigg Brathwaite, who made the decision to step down from the position.
On May 20, speaking on the Mason and Guest Show in Barbados, Lloyd said that because Chase has not been a consistent member of the team over the years, he would have chosen someone else.“He is in and out of the side,” Lloyd said.“I thought the captain would have been a permanent member (of the side)...so it seems a bit odd.”
Lloyd had years of experience leading the regional team in the 1970s and 1980s, guiding the team in one of their most dominant periods. Chase was one of many players who were shortlisted. Jomel Warrican was named vice-captain.The shortlisted players were John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves, Chase and Warrican.

Chase as WI Test captain 'odd'..Sir Clive Lloyd
In reply to sgtdjones
Thank you, Clive.
DOC: Lack the experience for the position.
He may be good at reading, but most of his decisions are not tested.
Let's think of the duties of the Coach/selector of the three formats.
Is he located in Antigua, which houses the Academy?

Is this the same Lloyd who was advocating for Shai Hope-less to be made captain?
This is the reason why Mikey Holding has distanced himself from Big Pu$$y in recent times…he will sing for his supper with scant regard for any semblance of self respect
It is kind of ironic Lloyd would say that about Chase's appointment, Lloyd was in and out of the WI team when he was appointed to the captaincy also. Hooper was not a regular member of the WI team when he became captain.
Chase is not captain material, end of story, how many times he captain Barbados?
Kirk McKenzie should be the captain...
Come in Slippy... let them know about the new GOAT.

That remains to be seen. It will be interesting to observe, I think and hope it will be the resurgence of Chase as a Test cricketer.
In reply to dayne
captain's appointment usually helps the appointee improves his batting average; guess you become more responsible, so that is expected, but I am looking for someone to motivate the team.
In reply to camos
You also stated many times he does not look like a cricketer without explaining.
Lloyd may be right on this occasion, still appreciating his contribution to our cricket, but I lost respect for his opinion. As head selector, he tried to justify leaving Bravo out of the WI T20 squad while Bravo was selected on the world 11. That has to be someone who is ah a food embodied.
In reply to FanAttick
All that depends on when, before or after his test average duck below 30?
In reply to natty_forever
He was arguing for Hope-less than a month ago brethren!
A shot in the dark with eyes closed is almost sure to miss its target
This will not end well
Sammy is way out of his depth

Sammy is way out of his depth
This has been the case for the past 2 decades where all the coaches and captains have been out of their depths and the teams have been disgraceful to say the least. You think Da Silva with a 20 something average will now magically add a feather into Sammy's cap and the team will start winning?
It has not ended well for the longest while by the way ... so?
So…..appoint yet another Baje
Guaranteed not to end well

Lets continue with the bajes and hope despite doing the same thing over and over for a different result
Einstein was wrong about his definition of madness

Thank you Sir Lloyd for not mincing words. That is the CWI/Bajan playbook, when a player fails, hideout him out for a period of time then reselect him, thinking that we are all blind fools not to see what they are doing. Meanwhile if you are a Yardie or from another island, there are no re-selection for you just discarded. Let’s see their intentions towards DeSiva, who has been scoring runs lately?

The tests has been cancelled a debate will be held instead
Sammy way in front of us
Who talks best wins
Interesting
When Lloyd (deservedly and astutely so) was appointed WI captain he was out of the side for quite some time!!
Holder's elevation to the captaincy (by Lloyd) was also quite odd.
In reply to Brerzerk
To compare The Great Clive Lloyd to Chase is an insult of the highest order
To compare the west indies team at that time to this one is beyond stupidity
We could have probably fielded about three world class teams
In reply to pariaman
You are conflating. Lloyd finds it strange that Chase who has been in and out o the team and has been out for some time now is appointed cappo.
Lloyd was appointed Cappo in the same manner. I find those comments interesting, how is that comparing both men on anything but how they were appointed, what is the relevance of team comparisons from the different eras and how many teams WI could field.
Befo' yuh claim that someone is doing something they aren't doing and that it is beyond stupidity duh 2 tings fuss.
a. Read weh yuh write
b.look pon 4 odder finga a pint back pon yuh.
er c. Larn fi read what is in front a yuh and not wah inna yuh 'ead.
Lloyd wanted Jason Holder to be cappo for life

Lloyd is advocating ‘Yes’ in favor of Hope, and ‘No’ to Chase. So I don’t understand your complaint about that… He said that it’s odd that Chase was selected to be captain.
The trouble is nobody told him that Hope refused the job….
Lloyd is an old man and should not be consulted on these matters. He’s too far removed from the details.
Anyway, concerning that other thing about himself being in and out of the team before being made captain. The facts would show that Lloyd played in all of the previous 10 test matches before being appointed captain.
Let me break it down for you as simple as i can
A player in Lloyd's time could be out of the team and still be a world class player.
Right now most of the players on the team are not world class players
Chase is certainly not a world class player and his returns against Australia will prove this beyond all doubt
In reply to Elsie
Lloyd's choice of Hope is old news,is that still his claim?
In reply to natty_forever
Yes.... It is, he called for Hope on the Mason Show this past Tuesday. Ironically, it was already made public that Hope did not want the job..
In reply to Elsie
Elsie thanks, though partially incorrect you've reminded me that Lloyd played vs. NZ '72, Oz and England '73. '72 he came in for injured Rowe.
'73 he did not play the full series vs. Oz. but made very good runs when he played. Because I remember him as an outstanding 12th man in the covers
at Sabina I forgot he did play in the series. Lloyd mentioned that when The Dashing Freddo made an unusually slow 160+ (Headingly?) '73 as the senior
player at the presser he informed them that WI is now playing to a different rhythm...no longer calypso but reggae.
In reply to Brerzerk
And there you have it why Yaadies are failing. Trying to play calypso cricket when we built for Reggae!
In reply to natty_forever
Hahahaha. Reggae on brother
In reply to googley
The only team that plays "Reggae" has consistently ranked in the top 5 in the world.
In reply to Elsie
Lloyd said no to Chase because he’s been in and out of the side but is saying yes to Hope who is an abject failure in tests and who has been out of the side for years? Make that make sense.
In reply to natty_forever
If Jamaica had gone alone and taken cricket as seriously as track and field and football, we would have long surpassed WI in world rankings but since we are blamed for destroying Federation, we continue to link ourselves with one the last vestiges of colonialism, much to the embarrassment of many Jamaicans.
In reply to Slipfeeler
Jamaica takes football seriously?
Jamaican track and field is about coaches and managers investing in the sport, not administrators.
The greatest captain, but not the greatest comment. Who are the permanent players in that team to choose from besides the one who resigned, and Roach? Not even one of those on the short list have been permanent. Roach at 36 is on his way out, and a bit injury prone recently. So, ask the great Clive Lloyd, who is the permanent player he recommends?
Is Lloyd part of the decision making committee???
Why the obsession with a sound bite of one who is not part of the process???
