Punjab Kings vs Mumbai Indians, Qualifier 2
Narper
2025-06-01 12:15:54
What to expect: With the pitch under covers, making a prediction is tricky, but a high-scoring contest appears likely.
Of the 14 innings played in Ahmedabad during IPL 2025, nine have seen totals in excess of 200, the most at any single venue in a single IPL season.
That trend is expected to continue on Sunday night, unless one side suffers a dramatic meltdown, as Punjab did in Qualifier 1. Teams batting first have won six of the seven games with the only win for a chasing side coming in a day game.
So the captain winning the toss may choose to bat.

Oh dear! There is a slight drizzle. Covers are on. The square is being covered. There are a few dark clouds overhead. Hope the wind blows them away soon. Groundsmen still not covering the whole square. Few of the pitches on the side are visible.

Players getting ready. We will have a slightly delayed start but should start in a matter of minutes

Just in a couple of minutes the rain is coming down hard now. Players leave the dugout to go the dressing rooms. But there is still a strong breeze blowing across. Few players have stayed back in the dugout

This is frustrating. The rain is back. Groundsmen rushing to get the covers back on. The wait continues. Interestingly, they aren't using a cloth or a hessian on the pitch before putting on the main cover. PBKS players stay out for some footy. Rain is not heavy, but it's there!

How epic would it be if PBKS finally lifts the IPL trophy? After all these years, seeing a first-time champion rise would bring a whole new thrill to the league. Fresh stories, new heroes — it’s exactly the kind of shake-up the IPL needs!

Topley to Priyansh Arya, SIX, picks the slower-ball and deposits it for six. Was a half-volley outside off, tried the back of the hand slower-ball and it did not pitch where he wanted it to, Priyansh Arya gets forward and lofts cleanly and clears the long-on fence

Bumrah to Josh Inglis, SIX, he has smashed this. A slower-ball off-cutter again, full outside off, Josh Inglis gets forward and slams it high and over long-on, picked the bones out of it
4.6
Bumrah to Josh Inglis, SIX, over Topley at third man. Bumrah has his hands on his head. 20 off the over. Not often do you see Bumrah going for 20. This is short of length outside off, Josh Inglis is on his tiptoes as he deals with the rising delivery, slashes and the top-edge just clears the leaping Topley, the tallest man on the field right now

Ashwani Kumar to Priyansh Arya, out Caught by Hardik Pandya!! Ashwani Kumar strikes first ball. A hard back of a length delivery just outside off, Priyansh Arya tries to slug it to leg, off the thick outer half of the bat and it's a simple catch to mid-off. The bat turned in his hands and that foiled all timing. Hardik takes it and does a little jig. MI break the threatening stand.

Hardik Pandya to Josh Inglis, out Caught by Bairstow!! Hardik Pandya gets the big wicket. Fine call from umpire Nitin Menon. The review doesn't save Inglis too. It's a good short ball outside off, Inglis tries to get on top of it and pull, it's a top-edge and Bairstow catches and appeals immediately, Hardik joins him later belatedly. Nitin Menon though had the finger up in a flash.

Santner to Nehal Wadhera, FOUR, Dhir at deep mid-wicket is in some 10 yards and the chance goes. Had he been right back, it was a catch to him, slower and it sits up short on off, Nehal Wadhera goes on the back foot and pulls it flat and hard, clears the leaping Dhir, who suggests he couldn't have done anything about it. Leapt as high as he could, but the ball clears him

Topley to Shreyas Iyer, SIX, hat-trick of sixes. Pandya grimaces. This is another half-volley just outside off, Shreyas Iyer is lofting them beautifully, gets forward and holds his shape, lofts splendidly into the sightscreen, suddenly the pressure is on Topley
12.3
Topley to Shreyas Iyer, SIX, Shreyas Iyer picks the bones out of this. Worried looks on Hardik and the other MI players. It's a half-volley outside off, seam-up, Shreyas gets forward and lofts clean and nice over long-on, was in the slot and Shreyas did not miss out

13.4

Ashwani Kumar to Nehal Wadhera, out Caught by Santner!! A twist? Such a pivotal moment this. Fullish outside off, near the tramline, Nehal Wadhera has to reach for it, miscues it and it loops up in the air, extra-cover goes back and Santner is such a safe fielder, he takes it and Pandya is all smiles. It's the timeout as well.

Bumrah to Shreyas Iyer, FOUR, the shot of the innings. One of the shots of the tournament for me. A pinpoint yorker on middle, as Bumrah went wide of the crease and angled it in, Shreyas Iyer though stays low, opens the face of the bat and directs it wide of Topley at short third man, played it as late as he can and more importantly got the gap, Topley went to his left and did not dive, maybe that would have helped. Unreal shot that

Ashwani Kumar to Shreyas Iyer, SIX, Shreyas Iyer you absolute rockstar! He has finished this chase of 204 with an over to spare. And knocked out his Ranji side from the IPL. And no celebrations at all from Shreyas. He just hugs Stoinis and gets on with it. He is so stoic. Meanwhile Pandya is on his haunches and is left gutted. This is another slot ball outside off, Shreyas as he has done all through this over, lofts clean and high and the white-ball when it left the bat was destined for just one place and that was over the fence, flies over long-on

Hardik Pandya | MI skipper:
The way Shreyas batted, took his chances and some of the shots he played were really outstanding and I think they definitely batted really well. I think it was par, but it needed some great execution as a bowling unit which I think in these big games it really matters and as I mentioned they were really calm, put us under pressure and I think we were not able to execute the way we wanted. I will not put it on the wicket, if we had to something better it was maybe someone bowling right lengths or maybe right bowler at the right point, the result could have been a bit different. In hindsight, it would have been different (whether he should have bowled Bumrah with 41 needed of 4 overs) )and it would have been too early as well, Boom knowing the situation if even 18 balls are left Jassi can be Jassi and he can do something special and it just didn't happen today

Shreyas Iyer | Punjab Kings captain and Player of the Match:
(On being calm while batting) I don't know to be honest, I love such big occasions. I always say to myself and to my colleagues in the team that the bigger the occasion, the calmer you are, you get the big results. Today was a right example where I was focusing more on my breathing rather than sweating out there. (On chasing a 200+ target) All players need to be assertive and show that intent from ball one. The intent was stupendous and even for me, I had to take some time. From the other end, the batsmen were striking pretty well. I know the more time I spend on the field, the better I get and my vision also gets better
