He could have stayed if he wanted to as the Irish series ends on the 15th and the Oz series starts 29th June. However he realizes how crucial this series is and opted to leave early.

That’s not unusual. Rahul Dravid frequently did it for india, and Laxman used to take over. I’m sure others have done it too
