I never realized just how much bigger cricket fields are than baseball fields until I watched one innings of the opening match of U.S. MLC, played at the repurposed Oakland Coliseum
Until this year, the Coliseum had the largest playing area in all of Major League Baseball. By some distance. 140,000 sq ft (including 30,000 sq ft of foul ground). I knew cricket fields were big but I have never seen a match in person.
Lord’s is 170,000 square feet and MCG is 270,000. Even the smallest Intnat. Grounds are much larger than baseball grounds. How much? The cricket infield circle at the Coliseum is larger than the outfield.
As to the game, Finn Allen hit 19 sixes and the team hit 27 sixes and 10 fours. Allen broke Chris Gayle’s all time one game sixes record, but it ‘‘it is pretty meaningless, it seems to me. His team scored more than 250.
Anyway, I was never really aware of how small baseball fields are, and how much bigger cricket fields are. And the amount of ground that cricket fielders have to cover. I have watched MLB baseball all my life but am a new cricket fan (been following it since 2002). I find cricket immensely more interesting, sort of like playing chess after a lifetime playing checkers.
