The Lesson of Temba Bavuma

Something that happened on Bavuma's debut has stuck with me.
On the 1st occasion of a fully Black indigenous Saffie batsman on debut
a short nervous lad edged one for four. Stokes the bowler sledged 'You're Shit!'
Stokes knew the significance of that statement as Bavuma was seen by many as a 'quota pick.'
So too was his appt as captain. But now, here we are.

Lesson- Many without privilege are not asking for special treatment but just to be given a
chance of a level playing field and fair time span to prove themselves.
It is different from pulling the mediocre from obscurity and giving them leadership and power.
More on that next post.

I mentioned earlier Graeme Smith criticizing his captaincy….the vultures were ready to pounce even though Captain Fantastic Bavuma is poised to take them to heights they have never been in their history…despite the many attempts by the lesser hued skippers including Smith himself

Add the CEO who credited WI with gaining 1st innings points in a test match and the guy who couldn't hold down a spot on the team but became skippa and now without any qualifications and a horrid losing record with his domestic franchise but is now coach. Dotard setting the country back by 30yrs and the Cabal above set WI back 20

temba get so much criticism simply for looking more like hashim amla(sa's first colored/black captain) than graeme smith. i'm very happy for him. And even though he had issues scoring converting 50s into hundreds earlier, his runs were vital. I remember the first test vs the aussies at the WACA....australia had the top order in all sorts of trouble. du plessis and bavuma stood up...du plessis scored a hundred, bavuma a 50 and that partnership tired out australia, which was vital because steyn had fractured his shoulder halfway into the test. Proof that hard work and persistence pays off. And that cricket is the only sport that allows people of limited talent to excel once they work hard. Some of our west indian batsmen can learn from that. that talent is not enough

Ashwell is considered 'colored' as opposed to Obama being considered black in America. Temba's fifties were as important to RSA as Logie's used to be for WI. For quite some time their averages were about the same. Now, Bavuma's seems to be inching ahead.

.Not to mention when that pompous fool engineered the exclusion of the better more talented player like Gayle, Sarwan, Bravo, Taylor, et al to smooth the pathway for talentless compatriot, Sammy.

Do you remember his idiotic comment that he did not want "a team of stars" but a "star team" comprising the likes of Sammy?

Recall also his prediction that, without the likes of Sarwan and Gayle - the so- called prima donnas- " The HPC Guys" would take West Indies back to the top of the rankings "within 5 years"?

More than a decade later, how is that going?

that was the start of the west indies descent into test cricket irrelevance....look at gayles captaincy record where those same gentlemen comprised the side: drawing with the second best ever SL test team(vaas, murali, sanga, dilshan, mahela). Sri lanka was ranked 5th, WI 8th and we were widely expected to lose that series. We drew. Winning our first test in south africa that same year, not losing to New zealand for the first time in 13 years in december 2008. beating the england team of pietersen, strauss, flintoff, anderson, broad, ryan sb, matt prior in 2009....the same team that would beat Australia later that year and beat the aussies again in 2010.Participants in an extremely competitive frank worrell trophy we would have drawn if not for poor umpiring with the captain dwayne bravo and adrian bharath all scoring hundreds and gayle fully leading from the front. This was also the series where kemar roach injured ricki ponting out of the third test

The story behind that is not Sammy’s fault - I am no fan but that was about the businessmen siding wid Digihell and ousting Cable and Wireless
