The Art of Batting: The Craft of Cricket’s Greatest Run Scorers by Jarrod Kimber
Most batters just do their best, yet the top players create art. It is physically impossible to face an 80mph delivery and track it with your eyes, yet the greatest batters do more than just watch the ball, they can see into the future.
This book is about the batters who see what mortals don't: Javed Miandad purposefully making errors to manipulate the field; Sachin Tendulkar digging up a pitch to take on Warne; Shivnarine Chanderpaul practising non-stop on a beach until he mastered his technique; and Joe Root playing against spin as a result of three random events. Others, such as Smith, Pietersen and Richards, carried on the work of a man 100 years before their time
Note that this list only covers the dying format of the game.
The top ten according to the book are:
1 Bradman
2 Tendulkar
3 Hobbs
4 Hutton
5 Lara
6 Smith
7 Gavaskar
8 Viv Richards
9 Sobers
10 Kallis

jarrod is a moron...steve smith above viv...smith would be killed in the 80s ifif he fidgeted to marshall, whispering death and imran like that without a helmet.....tendulkar has better technique that lara. but tendulkar is not a better batsman than tendulkar. the vast majority of their contemporaries, the people who actually bowled and batted with them have said as much....and therefore tendulkar is not better than viv, who was marginally better than lara. list is rubbish. and kallis does not belong in the top ten...at all

There should never, ever be any discussion about batting innovation, field manipulation and class batsmen without mentioning one R.B. Kanhai The Great Babu!

exactly kimber is a fan boy who only knows stats....i respected him until he wrote this nonsense about gayle's dubious dismissal in the 2019 world cup fixture between the WI and Australia
Starc was all over Chris Gayle in what seemed like an ego-off. In one over, he almost had him caught twice, had him reprieved for a caught-behind after a snick off the stump rather than the bat, and had an lbw decision given and then rescinded. That he finally got his man - albeit with a ball that should have been delivered as a free hit - seemed like a deserved wicket. With Gayle gone, Australia always seemed to have a sniff.
