Seems like his main idea about affordability should resonate with most people

They are unconfortable with Mamdani because he scares the crap out of Jewish New Yorkers, who make up a large part of the Democratic base in NYC. The NYC mayorship is ripe for the picking if a moderate Republican candidate not named Curtis Sliwa emerges

Populist (pie-in-the-sky) ideas always resonate with people.

Think “we will build a wall and Mexico will pay for it”. Same thing—popular but unworkable.

Democratic leaders know that and decent politicians who care about serving do not just throw out a laundry list of populist ideas because they know that they will be called to account when these ideas fail.

Also, NYC is high profile and the guy has said some pretty radical stuff that could be tied around the necks of democrats running in swing or more moderate districts. They know that America is not NYC. That’s called being realistic.
