You lived next door to a family from foreign for over a decade. You got along really well - showed them how to get around, took them around, invited them over during the holidays.

They spend a year overseas - he returns and now needs references for decent accommodation. He asks me and then sends a note complete with the recommendation letter that he has written. He asks me to sign it.

NO - denied. I only sign letters I write. I won’t even discuss the level of arrogance that took. Ah well I won’t lose any sleep over that.

Why not offer to write it in your words, to the extent that you can assess their suitability truthfully?

Ahh ok. It’s well within your right, but maybe 5% he had reason to assume you would give him a recommendation and tried to make it easier for you by preparing it?

He asked me for a recommendation. I said OK. M He can’t then write it and assume I would sign it. I actually ran it by my lawyer touring partner - she said she would not sign it either.

He's obviously had the experience of that Inna foreign. More than once I've asked for recommendations only to be told go ahead and write it...

It's the done thing here in the U.S.! In the past, I wrote my recommendation and asked my professor to sign it!

It’s sort of par for the course in Uncle Sam country ..typically I would review and sign if it sounds reasonable…

Yes he just wanted a signature…and I understand why that comes across as presumptive behaviour.

Are you able to share what the lawyer thought would cause her not to sign the document?
