The context of Lara 400 is poetic
Gets a record at the hight of his career, looses it later in his career and then gains it again at the twilight of his career
Winning really doesn't matter in that context

Nobody can take that away from Lara, he owns the record

most west indians do not like lara, for some absurd reason, maybe he strikes at the core of their deep insecurities, so i would assume the 418 is cherished more. to me the 418 was at the end of a lost series and the only pressure was to ensure australia did not whitewash us, which they stated as an objective before the tour.

Wasn't Lara 400* after a series lost against England at home ?

yes. west indians would have reacted in a worse manner however, to an english whitewash than an aussie one. australia is still a team the WI begrudgingly respect. there is no love or respect for the english, and especially from the west indian public who still understand and appreciate test cricket. nobody would have been understanding of the fact that england came with an extremely quick and skillful attack which would beat SA away from home that winter and regain the ashes the next year

I witnessed the 400* and it was 751/5 declared which just as significant. Until today I am still upset I missed the 418 run chase which I think for me was just as special. That 153* should be placed with all three innings as the best in the last 20 -30 years.

My trini friend and I were planning to take a drink this evening if Lara record fell.

Guess we will be taking a drink to celebrate that the record still stands.

Just a correction i think it was 418 not 408 ...anyhow i would cherish the run chase more because it was a team effort....but Lara's record will probably last longer because it is unlikely that there will be another captain as selfish as Lara who find themself in that position an unwilling to put the team before personal ambition...Mark Taylor (334*) might have taken it down but he declared putting the team 1st ....Lara great player as he was was all about personal ambition an records in stark contrast to somebody like Viv who just wanted to win an entertain in doing so!

Of course we have the mental capacity to love both but one will fall before the other so which one would you like to outlast the other?

Lara striking at the core of people’s insecurities? Steupes. Man, get a grip.
