are playing U19 and U15 cricket?
How many primary schools are playing cricket?
How many have access to a decent cricket ground?
How many can afford a decent coach - gear, the cost of travel and on and on.

I heard some official numbers today.
Neo-liberalism mashed up cricket like everything else.
Allyuh tink it easy.

Chrissy, it is a vexed subject for me. It hurts.
I know we are living in totally different Times but still is a grievous
topic for me.
When I attended Rousseau Elementary in the 50s, cricket was the thing and we played competitively all over the
Corporate Area in what was the Eddie Matcham Competition and all games were played at Kingston Race Course George VI Park,Town Moor
now Heroes Circle/ Park. And the ground was the biggest in the Country being surrounded by a Cycling track(dirt) hence the name Town Moor.
Greenwich school was all Island champions in back to back years, defeating a St.Mary school in the second title match.
That school was in our Zone with Providence and Whitfield Town who like Cockburn Pen(Coburn Gardens) did not compete in my time.
But Greenwich had two stalwarts in the late Selbourne Mitchell and the younger Milton Wisdom who went to to XLCR and Kensington CC.
Roussea which moved from Rousseau Road to a large site behind Maxfield park Children's Home had the biggest playing field
in Kingston , and this encouraged great participation in football also.
In recent times, schools are being built without any playfield and when they do are aan after thought and placed on a hill side too.
Folks really do not know or care to know how beneficial sports is to the development of young people.Same with the Arts.
Don't get me started, Chrissy. smile

Excellent question.
Research should be done to compare active cricket pitches and grounds in the mid eighties vs today.

School grounds
Sugar estate grounds
Community center grounds
First class grounds
International grounds

According to reports, not much school cricket is played in Georgetown, some of the grounds are covered with high grass, but it might be a different situation in Berbice, that's why lately, most of the better players from Guyana are from Berbice

Years ago almost all of the schools in Guyana had a ground.. these days almost all of the school grounds are gone. Being used for Government building etc.

As for maintenance of grounds... the estates used to maintain a number of community grounds. These days a bunch of power drunk people are controlling them and using it for their own gain. You need special permission from them to use the grounds.

These days for a kid to play cricket you need to carry them to one of the clubs in G/Town or maybe Berbice... all de clubs in the various communities are not functioning or if they are they don't have an active youth programme.

Ah don't see it getting better anytime soon.

Talk about misinformed.

You once said and insisted that Matthew Forde lived in St Lucia until he was a young man when I posted he played under 15 and under 19 cricket in Barbados you ran away and never responded

Like I said, in Colonial times the Massa built and maintained the infrastructure, he supplied the gears from elementary to University!
Since Independence everything gradually deteriorated to where we are today!
What ever you want to call it, that is how I see it. And it’s all segments of the Caribbean.

Your statement fully qualifies as sarcasm.
BTW the evidence is there, thanks to the cows, that grounds have become pastures or housing schemes.

Not true! At least not re gears. What Massa did was get big companies (who weren't paying enough taxes anyway) to sponsor gears. Some rural schools only had 2bats and kids in official matches had to wear 1 pad.

When I went to Elementary school in the 70s in the country I remember my school had a ton of gears.
Plus cricket was prominent within the sugar estates.
Also, in Guyana there were Division I (Case Cup), II (Northcote Cup) and III (Wight Cup) cricket on weekends. Don’t know if that’s still happening!
