Tragic loss. Seems like he got caught in a rip current, panicked and tried to swim against the current instead of swimming parallel to the shore to get out of the rip current before swimming back to shore. It is a common and deadly mistake made by inexperienced swimmers.

Thankfully I have never experienced it, but I have seen several news reports over the years of unsuspecting tourists drowning in Florida after being swept away by rip currents.

Yep in Costa Rica.
I’m a decent swimmer and never try stuff in new environments.
People often panic. Sad indeed with two young kids.

I'm the same regarding new environments. The sea has to be calm like a swimming pool for me to swim into the deep at an unfamiliar beach, and even then I don't venture out far.

One more thing - do not go for early morning or late evening swims on your own

One cannot trust the currents along the Caribbean coast in Costa Rica. The sea floor has been chopped up so many times by earthquakes from volcanic activity.

I went to a popular beach called Playa Bonita in Costa Rica where I saw life guards rescue over 5 persons during the day. I myself felt a serious drag from a current in waist deep water!

And you know that area well.

Here in JA you cannot pay me to swim at Treasure Beach.
If the Harbour and Bull Bay regulars are sitting on the beach at Cable Hut, I am not going in the water.

I heard that Warner was swimming with his young daughter and that a surfer saved her first, but could not save both of them.

Sad story.

If the waves are big enough for surfing, going for a swim would not be an option for me or any of my children.

I agree with your caution, however you can surf in waist deep water.

My cousins surf in Jamaica at Bull Bay. I never had the time to develop my surfing beyond standing up on the board.

Definitely warn persons to be cautious, had a surfing incident when my line to the surfboard got stuck on a reef. I had to time the waves to take deep breaths while I untangled the line.
