I didn’t get arrogance from his responses.

I did get an almost fatalistic sort of vibe from his responses. Que sera sera.

Likely a reflection of his personality.

It was a response with a built in excuse. It matched the way he played in the test matches. After several balls he played he or his bat will end in an awkward position as if to suggest something unusual is happening here.
