T&T Defence Minister reveals shocking breach: 65-inch TV in jail cell

Prison officers are so fearful of the criminal element behind bars that at least one of them was afforded the luxury of a 65-inch TV in his cell, while guns and other contraband items are easily trafficked into the prison system. The shocking revelation came from Defence Minister Wayne Sturge during a budget consultation at Three Roads, Freeport, on Wednesday night.Sturge said the items were discovered inside Building 13 at the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca, where the high-risk prisoners are housed.

“You would know that there are things that are allowed into prisons illegally. No one is surprised about marijuana and cocaine and other drugs and so on, and other types of contraband. But I don’t know if you are aware that recently, a couple guns were found in prison,” Sturge said.“That’s a serious security risk. But to tell you how far we have descended and which is indicative of how fearful prison officers are of some of the elements, there’s a certain prisoner, I won’t call his name, a certain prisoner who had in his cell in the infamous Building 13, which is reserved for the worst of the worst, he had in his cell a very large flat screen TV.”

He added, “Now, usually when you confront the prisons about how things are going in, they don’t seem to bring anything into the prison. It’s always drones dropping it in. So I don’t know how they dropped in a 65-inch TV.”Noting this was evidence of the deep entrenchment of organised networks behind bars, Sturge said, “On the one hand, we may believe that prison officers are corrupt. On the other hand, there’s another dynamic to it. There are human beings and they are subject to the same fears that we have. More so, where they work is where the prisoners live. And it’s not hard to find out where they live and so on. So they are obviously fearful.”
Highlighting the scale of the crisis, Sturge said six “very dangerous” individuals had to be extracted from the prison and relocated during the current State of Emergency because they could not be properly restrained.“In order to curb that, we had to cut off the head of the snake,” he said.

Gonzales: UNC unprepared to fight crime

Former minister of National Security Marvin Gonzales says the discovery of a 65-inch television in a prison cell exposes serious failings by the Government, which he claims came into office unprepared to tackle crime.
Gonzales, who served on the National Security Council under the former People’s National Movement (PNM) administration, yesterday said the public should have received a full explanation from current Minister of National Security Wayne Sturge, after he made the revelation during a pre-budget meeting on Wednesday.

“Minister Sturge should have been providing the nation with a proper explanation on how a 65-inch television arrived in a prison cell and why all security measures that were put in place to prevent this very kind of criminality failed,” Gonzales said.“He should then assure the nation of what measures will be implemented to prevent this from happening in the future. He has now fallen into grave error by appealing to the population to be patient. Clearly, the UNC has been caught with its proverbial pants down when they were elected on April 28, since they really never had a plan to treat with all aspects of criminality in Trinidad and Tobago.”

Gonzales said the Government is now “scrambling and exposed” and accused them of asking the country to “hold strain” in the face of growing public alarm.Asked whether he had ever heard of the television during his tenure, Gonzales replied, “Never. Nothing of this nature was ever reported to me.”

......Questions over ethnic composition of State boards
Jearlean rips into Gonzales

Gonzales is a moron in parliament.

Instead of a TV, the population was counting over 5,000 dead bodies of citizens under your tenure since 2015.

One of your representatives noted : A Calcutta ship is coming from India.

“Let me tell you this, when I looked at it, I wonder if we are living in Bangladesh or Delhi, that’s all I can say,” said Gonzales when asked for comment on recent State board appointments.

You recently said the UNC boards for various government entities look like ones in Bangladesh and India.

‘Attempt at bacchanal...much bigger issues than a 65-inch TV’

President of the Prison Officers Association (POA) Gerard Gordon has pushed back against what he describes as a deliberate attempt to “create a bacchanal” over the presence of a television in a prison facility. The POA head said the real problems in the prison system are not about televisions or prisoner privileges, but rather about deeper failures within the criminal justice system, including judicial delays, overcrowding, and poor infrastructure. And what makes it worse is we talking about remanded people. A remanded person is innocent until proven guilty.”

He noted that nearly 75% of the prison population consists of remanded individuals who are yet to face trial or be convicted.“Why is a man in remand for 14 years? There are cases where the state prosecutor would have died, would have moved on in their career, the officers who charged these individuals are no longer in service. But people remain in custody for years, some since 2014, and their cases haven’t started,” Gordon lamented.Gordon also highlighted how poor and vulnerable individuals are disproportionately affected by these systemic delays, often spending years behind bars without access to bail or adequate legal representation.

“How long must a man be before the courts? A man can sit down for three years in jail right now and be completely innocent. And the only reason they don’t sue the State is because they don’t have the money for it,” he said.It have people who had been charged with manslaughter and go through the lower court and then the High Court, and can come out in a few years. Yet the poor man has to remain in custody. And some persons are here for over a decade,” he said.

I had to laugh at that MP Gonsales comment about whether he was looking at Delhi or Bangladesh,he should cut the racist comment and consider making more comments to help than hinder or cause uneasy feelings.Seems like Rowley was mining the criminals.
