What a groundsman sees as hallowed turf, some may see as an outdoor ablutions block.

Exactly. If Massa had stood his ground like this, there would have been praises.

The caste system in India is no different. That’s exactly how Gambhir would talk to a groundsman in India.

That could have been true except that Gambhir explicitly said that his refusal to follow orders wasn’t because it was Massa but because Massa is only a groundskeeper…..

Gambhir would have jumped through hoops for a higher statured Massa…

I cannot disagree with you. In fact, it’s interesting that they hired Ten Doscathe??? (I might have the spelling wrong) as the assistant bowling coach. Are we to believe that there are no quality bowling coaches/former bowlers in India? But they would not listen to one of their own but they would to a foreigner. We saw the same with the West Indies team as well a few years ago.

I dont like Gambir for 1 second but the Englishman was wrong here. Tried to treat Gambir like a citizen of the British Empire

Groundmen are quite protective of their turf. They are a different breed. They treat it more than just a job. Not like Ralphie.

One can easily get carried away with the Groundsman and Gambir flareup that obfuscate the real issue. That was only symptomatic of the underlying issue throughout the series.
After losing the first test, India came back strong to win the second test. England did not expect that. Then expected them to fold. Before the third test,Harry Brook told the team “we are too nice”. That’s a direct quote. England came back aggressively and won the third though the Indians made it tougher than it should’ve been.
But the real salt in the wound was when the Indians draw the 4th after 150+ overs in the field, facing a deficit of 300+ and losing two wickets in the first over with five sessions left to play.
The likkle coolie bhai them were supposed to roll over and they didn’t and that’s what pissed them off no end with the subsequent handshake gate.

Should the coach not stand up for his team? Arrogant personality yes but was it wrong to disagree/object/push back?

I think you’re bringing in some unnecessary baggage here with the c….bhai references

It’s India, it’s cricket and it’s Gambhir- the coaching equivalent of a Koli

Does Not Apply

It’s ABE for you except when Indians involved ehh lol you know it’s the white man that created the caste system just like they created Christianity right???

Anyways the actual issue is India runs cricket due to their market share and the English can’t stand it!!! Not to mention Gambhir is just an arrogant asshole nothing to do with Caste and Massa no wonder WI is where they are our people are still stuck in the 70’s with their ideology and thinking!!!

Gambir overcompensates…same in the IPL Virat spat.

The England coach was allowed to walk all over the same pitch without objection.

India is not the same from last century. That ‘Coolie’ reference is still relevant however not impactful with this generation.
Cricket this great game can reveal a lot about how the world is turning.

Even that ‘slumdog millionaire’ headline is chock full of colonial mentality-unintended or not.
