After a closely-fought T20I series in USA that finished 2-1 in the favour of the visitors, West Indies and Pakistan meet again, this time in Trinidad for the first of three ODIs.

It's a format that hasn't been kind to either of the teams of late. Pakistan crashed out of the Champions Trophy at home in the early stages, while West Indies didn't even qualify for that tournament. They didn't qualify for the 2023 WC either, and if they're to do so for 2027, they'll have to work their way up the rankings where they currently sit at 10th place.

Narper 2025-08-08 17:34:08

Some dark clouds are looming above as the captains walk out for the toss.

Pakistan have won the toss and have opted to field

Rizwan:
Want to bowl first. The forecast is like that. There's moisture in the pitch as well. We need to adapt to conditions and apply ourselves.

Hope:
I would've bowled first as well, thinking along the same lines (as Rizwan). We still have our brand that we want to play. Guys have been showcasing that skill and talent. Important for us to remain consistent in this format. Certainly at the helm (qualifying for WC). We speak about the important of qualifying automatically.

Narper 2025-08-08 17:47:54

Pitch report | Samuel Badree and Stacy- Ann King:
T20 WC semifinal was played last here. It's a pitch that has favoured bowlers in the past. There is some brown grass and some green grass. Pitch is quite firm. Batting is going to be a challenge. They'll have to apply themselves. Spinners will be influential.

King done out areddy

Misjudge the length and didn’t bother to stretch to meet it properly

What a soft dismissal and very very immature

Shaheen Afridi to Brandon King, out Caught by Babar Azam!! Loose shot and gone! First-over Shaheen is back! Full outside off, going with the angle from over the wicket and King chases it without any footwork. Plays a loose drive in the air and it's a simple catch at cover for Babar.

14.2
Sufiyan Muqeem to Keacy Carty, out Caught by Salman Agha!! Soft dismissal. Full toss, down leg, the batter looks to paddle it but plays a half baked shot. The top-edge was gobbled up by the slip fielder running back. Windies have lost a wicket against the run of play. Keacy Carty has thrown it away here. He was too lazy in playing that paddle and has to pay the price. Sufiyan Muqeem gets his first.

Saim Ayub to Lewis, out Caught by Shaheen Afridi!! The wicket-taker in Ayub has delivered. Lot of air on the ball, Lewis looked to go big but only managed a lot of height on the shot. The ball went aerial and stayed up for a long time. Afridi got to the ball, circled under it and managed to grab it with his fingers pointing skywards. He didn't look steady while being under it. But did well to get his hands in the right position. Third wicket down. Ayub has struck in his third over.

Shamar Joseph to Shafique, out Lbw!! A celebappeal for LBW, umpire Allahudien Paleker shakes his head and West Indies have reviewed once again, was there an inside edge on this? Looked pretty straight, was the nip-backer and seems to have beaten Shafique on the inside edge - UltraEdge confirms the same and it's three reds on ball-tracking, Shafique is OUT. Exceptional bowling and an even better review as Pakistan lose both openers. Shafique was once again caught in the crease and this time there was no inside edge to save him - Shamar was outstanding in the Tests against Australia and he's looked umpressive here as well. Impact in front of middle and it's crashing into leg - Shamar wanted the review and coaxed his captain to go for it

No inside edge and it's too high for LBW - West Indies have lost both reviews now. Shamar wasn't convinced, but his captain was and they've burnt their reviews

Shamar Joseph to Rizwan, no run, a big appeal for LBW, but there was a clear inside edge, no reviews left either, jabebd back in sharply and Rizwan is very lucky to have got his bat down in time

Gawn !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
37.2
Shamar Joseph to Rizwan, out Lbw!! This looks plumb - Rizwan has been given OUT LBW and he has reviewed it. Didin't look confident, but has taken a chance. Was another nip-backer and Rizwan was once again caught in the crease, past the inside edge and struck flush on the knee-roll, in front of middle. It's crashing into leg, three reds and Rizwan is OUT. A massive breakthrough under the circumstances and this puts the West Indies ahead of the contest. Shamar was brought back to break this stand and he delivers for his captain

Jayden Seales to Hasan Nawaz, 1 run, dropped! Maiden half century for Hasan Nawaz. He has to thank Motie for his milestone though. A slower full delivery bowled full and wide fo off, Nawaz sits deep inside the crease and slices it straight to short third who fails to hang on a straightforward chance...

Hasan Nawaz | Player of the Match:
Feeling really blessed to play this knock on my debut. The plan was to build a partnership and the spinners were getting the ball to grip initially which is why we didn't take our chances. The plan was that Talat can target spin and I can handle pace and the plan worked well for us.

Narper 2025-08-09 05:19:51

Shai Hope | West Indies skipper:
It's a tough one, toss definitely has a big factor to play. Maybe we could have got a few more runs to put them under pressure. The surface has been way different in the night, in the first innings it was a lot slower and challenging. We need to have a bit more cushion (total with the bat) in such conditions. It was very, very wet in the second innings, especially for the spinners it was difficult to grip. We need to look at our mistakes and comeback strong in the next 2 games
.

Narper 2025-08-09 05:20:20

Mohammad Rizwan | Pakistan skipper:
Hasan Nawaz and Talat deserve all the credit. The conditions weren't easy, but to have that partnership coming in at 7, want to give a lot of credit to Hussain Talat. We want to improve a bit on our bowling, the ball was gripping in the first half and towards the end we gave a few too many runs I feel. Bowlers are happy because they feel it (having a single ball after the 34th over) can reverse and the feeling was different among the bowling group.
