lollollol

I have a stupid question but would like an intellectual answer lol

Were the WI greats really that good or were they just superior athletes playing against inferior athletes???

Is it similar to the argument in basketball where they say Jordan just played against a bunch of Caucasians who couldn't jump???

I really cyah tell yuh because I wasn’t born dem times.

You’ll have to get Dukes and openning to provide feedback there.

Although, I don’t know how objective that will be.

From my own experience, I remember watching the Brazil team play in the World Cup in 1982. I would swear that they are the greatest football team I have ever seen in football.

The emotions they stirred when they played USSR in their first match, Scotland, Argentina, and even the loss against Italy was the first time I had actually cried after a game in any sport. That loss hurt that much. The names…..Socrates, Zico, Falcao, Eder, Junior, Toninho Cerezo were like GODS in my memory. Even the shithounds like the striker Serginho and the goalie Waldir Peres stayed in the memory.

Then years later…..I watched a replay of that Brazil vs USSR match…….expecting to be thrilled as I was when it first happened. For the actual match, right after Brazil had completed the comeback to win, kids throughout my neighborhood ran into the street to try and recreate what they just witnessed. This one being Socrates…..a nex one Falcao….another Zico etc.

That replay was so anticlimactic. The football was good……but I’d seen better since. And I then realized that my memories were romanticized by how I felt at the time.

But the reality is……it doesn’t match what I’ve seen from Barca and Messi over the years as an example.

No disrespect to that great team of 1982…..but the football and footballers of today are better.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it may be similar in this instance.

That's one of the commonest cricket videos
Think this saw it even before internet

Re - Fielding an over enthusiastic Wes didn't call and bounced a safe pair of hands out di way.
Re- Superior athletes you're going down di road of Eugenics. Cricket history will reveal that every team had greats in every discipline of the sport

When the tied test was being played I was 4 years old. However I have seen much footage of the match and read many first hand accounts of various aspects of the match.
Sobers was once asked about the best fast bowler he faced and he said Trueman.Richards was asked the same question and he said Lillee.
Neither Richards nor Sobers hesitated for a second and both of them said identical things about them. They were RELENTLESS REGARDLESS of the type of wicket.

P.S Sobers did face Lillee when Lillee was 23 and Sobers 35.

I learned about scoring during that series. I was allowed to stay on Friday and Saturday nights; the other nights were rest for school.
This series was about Sir Frank Worrell, a proud black man.
Thank you, Mrs. Mason, for keeping Wendell and me awake during the last hours of the test. I can feel your energy now.

Mrs Mason suffered from arthritis and was in a wheelchair. She would score ball by ball and send me her scorecard daily; she knew I loved the game at my tender age.
After the series, there was a Parade in Australia for the West Indies team, and the trophy was named the Frank Worrell trophy.

Every era in the history of sports has produced great athletes.
The first West Indies great was George Headley, followed by the three W's. Just check their stats, Ram and Val were the talk of the town during an English tour, and with West Indian immigrants living in England, they made the tours feel homely.

The only game in town was cricket. Before the 1960/61 series, the team was captained by whites with some plantation mentality. Frank Worrell changed the players' belief, showing the world West Indies players were sportsmen and accomplished cricketers.
Once the Ump raises his hand, walk.

Here is some info about that tour

God you brought back some great memories of that team, glad now I never go back and look at them again, don't want to destroy the dreams
Also remember times when we would be playing on the street and the worst kid would be told stand up front and pretend to be Serghino.
Almost added to the aura around the team that he got selected.
