In the third round, the twelve teams advancing from the second round have been drawn into three groups of four teams. They will play round-robin home-and-away matches, with the three group winners qualifying for the World Cup. The two best-ranked runners-up will advance to the inter-confederation play-offs.[4]
The part highlighted in bold is instructive and MAYBE unclear.
If qualification were to end today, the 2 HIGHEST RANKED 2nd place (runners up) in the competition are:
Curacao
El Salvador
Of the 12 teams in the third round, the following 7 teams are all ranked higher than T&T:
Panama
Costa Rica
Jamaica
Honduras
El Salvador
Curacao
Haiti
I take this to mean that even if T&T were to win all of our remaining games (that would give us 13 points), and those 13 points were the best point total of any team finishing in the runner up spot in their group, any 2 teams from one of those 7 teams identified, with less points, would qualify for the Inter Continental Playoff ahead of T&T.
So it final standings COULD look like this:
Group A winner - Suriname
Group A runner up - El Salvador
Group B winner - Jamaica
Group B runner up - T&T
Group C winner - Honduras
Group C runner up - Costa Rica
T&T could have more points than El Salvador and Costa Rica, but both would qualify ahead of T&T because their respective FIFA rankings are higher.
T&T’s only FAINT hope of qualifying is to somehow win their group by hoping Jamaica drops points against Curacao, and somehow Curacao drops points against Bermuda at home.
In other words…..we’re fucked!
And it’s only game 2.
