Why would that be surprising?

There is precedent for this. In the past:

*We have had an individual who otherwise couldn't make the team on merit, being made captain in all formats;

* Another individual who had been out of the team for almost 5 years being shoe-hornedi into the team as captain.;

* One, still wet- behind - the ears, player was made captain a mere 4 games or so into his career;

* Yet another was made captain, it appeared, only because of his exploits in the last over of a World Cup.

There seems to be one common denominator in most of these curious appointments: they all carry the same colour passport!

Could it be that players are pulling out of the Nepal trip due to the current situation there?

The tour is in Sharjah not in Nepal. Seems like it will move forward.

Mayers has captained the Barbados team successfully.

Mayers is an experienced T20 player.
