Chase: Improved batting essential for competitive Windies performances

Tue, Oct 14, '25 at 9:17 AM

Despite finding themselves on the losing end of yet another Test result, the West Indies concluded their two-match series against India with a bandaged ego. The product of a heartening second-innings batting display in the second Test. Which ironically came while being forced to follow on in Delhi.

Captain Roston Chase wants the second innings to be a catalyst for his team on their journey to become competitive in the format. “This is the kind of fight that I wanted to see from us before,” he said. “I think this is a stepping stone for us to go forward and improve as a test-playing nation.”

While hosts India needed an additional 58 runs for victory entering Tuesday’s final day, the Caribbean side kept them at bay for 17.2 overs, prising two wickets in the process. An encouragement for the skipper. Chase insists, “Even if it's for us to lose, we have to lose in a good way, where we can have a lot of positives coming out of the game.”

Well, Chase is saying the obvious, the batting is the main deficiency, but he has the opportunity to lead from the front by being more consistent with his batting. in 5 Tests he has not scored a 50 yet.

@dayne

When has batting not been the deficiency in the last 40 years?

Yet nothing has been done to address this.

Players must be provided with the necessary support staff, equipment and playing time to perfect their batting technique and concentration.

@velo

Simple. Much less competitive.

Hope and Campbell showed that you can do much better than your average if you try harder. I am sure that the others are looking at that example going forward. I still think that if NZ produces some bowler friendly green tops, we may be more competitive there that our record suggests once Joseph x 2 are fit. The real thing is not to overburden the bowling unit on these intervening white ball tours in Bangla and NZ. We have to decide whether it is more important to try to win those matches or manage loads so that we can be at our best in the tests.

@Cuter

You can't perfect what you don't have in the 1st place. Fundamentals not learned in teens are then difficult to constantly reproduce as there is no muscle memory

@Brerzerk

Here in lies our continued problem. Yet the powers that be cannot see it. Even a basic forward defensive stroke is an adventure for these fellas.
