I spent three months in Caracas, the city of "eternal spring," cradled by mountains that seem to touch the clouds.

When you land at the airport, those mountains feel close enough to reach out and touch—steep slopes sprinkled with homes that sometimes slip away during the heavy rains. My team of engineers and I had arrived with the latest in automation technology, systems that could practically run themselves, powered by 16-bit computers and EPROM chips.

Caracas was alive, vibrant streets, generous people, and a rhythm all its own. Workdays started late, paused for long lunches, and carried into the evening. Syncrude Canada already operated one of our Hydrotreating and Hydrocracking units for processing their heavy tar sands, and here in Venezuela, the oil was strikingly similar, dense, stubborn, and full of potential.

Up in northwestern Venezuela lay a vast tidal estuary sitting on some of the richest petroleum reserves in the region, the Bolivar Coastal Fields. The oil here ranged from heavy to extra-heavy, pumped from beneath the earth and thinned with kerosene before making its way to the coast. There, massive storage tanks, each holding half a million barrels, waited. Before the oil was shipped out, the kerosene was recovered and cycled back to the wells for reuse, a neat, closed loop of efficiency.
