At its core, moral purpose is about relationships among people, and moral purpose comes alive through leadership actions that inspire, motivate, and energize people. Repeated calls from Captain Lara for players to lift their game continue to echo with a hollow resonance because Lara lacks the moral authority to lead. Talk of Lara's knowledge, talent, and experience simply misses the point. No one is questioning Lara's ability but, rather, the lack of credibility.
This is Lara's third unsuccessful stint as captain, and Lara has stated that he intends to play test cricket beyond the age of 40. When asked at the press conference in Guyana whether that meant that he intended to stay on as Captain, Lara was visibly irritated and declined to answer the question. If Lara truly cares about the future of West Indies cricket, and there is no reason to believe that he does not, then he would step down.
Another piece of bullshit. Another piece of manipulative moralizing that serves no purpose but to pick at the bones of the dead.
The Windies are just another sports team; not a church; not an army, not a government. Lara is not Christ,. All he wants and can expect, is that the members of the team selected to represent the West Indies turn up and give a 100%. If they do that and is defeated, it can be then concluded that they are just not good enough. If they give less than 100, it has nothing to do with Lara's lack of moral authority; the onus and responsiblity for performing as a team rest with the individual players.
When a bowler is given the ball, the decison to place the ball in the right spot has nothing to do with Lara's morals. When the decision is made by a batsmen not to play a ball on its merit, but instead execute a rash stroke, it has nothing to do with Lara's authority as captain, nor as moral leader. The same can be said about any other facet of the game.
The fault for failing to put out rest with those who select them, but ultimately with players.
Outside of ability and technique, there's attitude. Ponting alluded to that.
If many of us on this MB can be a bit more introspective, rather than what Larr said and now this Samaroo, the Windies team is a reflection of us. Just take some time to digest what is written here, and ask ourselves why should we expect anything better from the team that
"represents" us.
I don't want a moral leader in Lara to lead a cricket team; I just want him to do his best with the team he has at his disposal, and for each member of his team to be mindful of his role and responsibilities, and give the maximum at all times.
Neither Steve Waugh, Mike Bearley, nor Clive Lloyd, not even Christ could lead this team to win this World Cup.
