the attitude, application, capabilities, of the players are a direct result of wicb's incompetence.

there is no structure in place to nurture cricketers, starting at school level. in fact, this has been the situation since independence.

the mighty world beating windies comprised professional cricketers from the english county league. some people have referred to them as the english team comprising many who simply chose to play for the west indies. there is little point, in my view, in denying this stark reality, but instead, much danger.

and wicb can chop and change as much as they like. it will be to no good purpose if one disaster replaces another.

In reply to CaribbeanCricket.com I agree with you in many instances. But for west indies to make a complete turn around the attitude of the players have to change completely. West Indies team performance on the field of play is very poor. This is a reflection of poor commitment from the players in training. Players cannot be partying in the middle of a tournament or series and expect to win games or play well on match day. Regardless of who captains or coaches the team along with management the fortunes of our cricket will remain the same or change marginally. For West Indies to make a real turn around our attitude change would have to start from the grass roots of West Indies Cricket along with Management of the Regional and WICB Cricket Board then we will see more effort and fight from the team which over time produce the results we desire. I rest my case

We are dealing with AT LEAST two issues.

The WICB is responsible for the lack of skill in most players. They did not train them properly nor did they provide an appropriate structure to develop our game.

The attitude of the players on and off the field is their individual (and sometimes collective) responsibilities. If they cannot motivate themselves - regardless of how talentless and outclassed they are - then they should not be playing cricket for the West Indies.

In reply to dcbreds I agree with you and how you propose the WICB make the changes that will make this possible i.e.improvement in the skill of the players?

There are hundreds of ideas on here, but the four that I think are the most important are (a) a professional league with overseas players; (b) a longer season (10-15 games excluding one day games); (c) an academy; and (d) training and paying former cricketers to train our upcoming group of cricketers.

In reply to dcbreds I agree with you in all aspects but how would you fund this? But why not go a step further allow more teams to play first class cricket. In addition to this each territorial board should have a thier own first class club cricket and then we could have a caribbean champions league not including one day cricket

I am not one of those who believe in traditional funding of the game. I have already spoke about the need to include foreign players, broadcasting radio and tv over the internet, increasing the cricket conversation in the media to stimulate the passion.

Agree with you. there is many factors but this article adress the most important one poor leadership. This says it all -
"Confucius, tells us that as the wind blows so the grass bends, or, as we are wont to say in the Caribbean, a fish rots from the head. There is a crisis in the leadership of West Indies cricket in the persons of Ken Gordon and Brian Lara."

Quote from Cricinfo:
[those in the know firmly believe that the rot begins right at the top. Lara, they say, has never allowed the team to settle down, and worse, done his best to undermine any player who has crossed his path.]

the same theme of samaroo's article
