HEADLINE: Five facts about World Cup 2007

The following was released today by Cricket World Cup 2007 in response to the nonstop criticism of everything regarding the tournament:

1. There are very reasonably priced tickets available for CWC 2007 Matches. Tickets for the Group and Super 8 stages start as low as US$15 and US$25, respectively. These prices in many countries are lower than the comparable price for a regular One Day International match in the West Indies during the annual Test and One Day Series

Re five -that is not what was said or practiced by LOCs during warm up matches. Two contradictory views were stated on radio in Jamaica.

We even had a thread here because I knew I could take my food and drink and wasn't going to allow stupid talk to stop me.

For CWC 2003 in South Africa (pop. 44 million; per capita income US$12,000 pp) the overall average attendance per game was 10,451.

Then I guess the 2003 wikipedia entry needs to be updated, their figures are wrong..

626,845 (12,055 per match)

I hope that this figure is correct.

Overall average attendance to date: 7,550

From the 1st round games it didnt seem remotely that high...I wonder whether they'd release figures for the respective countries...

From cricinfo

A record crowd of 32,827 for a cricket match in South Africa attended the ICC Cricket World Cup Final between the champions Australia and India at the Wanderers Stadium on Sunday.

The previous record of about 31,500 was set for the preliminary round match between South Africa and New Zealand at the Wanderers on 16 February.

A grand total of 626,845 people out of an overall capacity of 825,000 attended the 52 matches and the Opening Ceremony.

"This represents 76 percent of our total capacity, and we are delighted at this attendance," said CWC 2003 Executive Director Dr Ali Bacher. "We would like to thank the South African public and the thousands of visitors from abroad for their fantastic support of the tournament."

What is the current percentage of total capacity in this World Cup....Any rough figures would be appreciated...I'm assuming that it is less than 50%, since the only ground with capacity less than 15K was St. Kitts....according the capacities given for the various grounds...

Why is the CWC 2007 continuing to add insult to injury with this so-called "response to the nonstop criticism to everything regarding the tournament". Item No. 2 is another example of why the criticisms are coming fast and furious. Even allowing for 4 years of inflation, the fact that the revenue to date is $28M compared to $10.5M for the 2003 WC,generated by average crowd attendances of 7,550 (higher for the last 3 games) and 10,451,respectively,CONFIRMS the people's complaints that the pricing structure is TOO DAMN HIGH. If baby-faced Dehring and his cohorts cannot do math then they should not have been put in charge of the tournament.

Try being honest with the people and the criticisms may be tempered, but not necessarily subsided!

Depends on how a lower price point from the outset would have impacted the gross revenue.

An an organizer I'd prefer to sell 8K tickets at a base of US60 a pop rather than 10K at US$45. More empty stands but a better bottom line.

True, but we could have had more impact by moderating the prices somewhat, pack the stands and re-energize Caribbean people's interest in cricket. I am afraid that after this WC is over, the intended impact of more interest in cricket from the region's youths may not materialize.

It's unrealistic to expect locals to be clamouring to see teams not named the West Indies playing. And WI games have be well attended

Given that the bulk of $ is made in TV, wouldnt there be a financial interest in making it look good for the at-home audience - which is better achieved with full stadia and a real crowd?

Ooohhh!

Defensive, aren't we, CWC?

Frankly, as an organizer, it should be your job to pack the stands of these small grounds with fans, and that entails dropping prices where necessary. Fans are not going to pay US$25 for a seat, if it's going to be at midwicket! We all know that the prices for tickets behind the bowler's arm are much higher.

Charging ridiculous sums for Australia vs Scotland was pointless, and even for NZ vs SL, because they don't have much of a travelling support.

In the UK, when they host teams like Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, the ECB gives free tickets to schools. That's how my children got to watch these teams at Lords. Instead of being so sensitive, that's the example you should learn from.

semi-final day, SL vs NZ, where are the big crowds now?

There are just three men and a dog in the stands....
