Retired West Indies batting legend Brian Lara is being linked to a breakaway Twenty20 competition taking place in India in October 2007.
According to a published report, Lara will be joined by Pakistan's Inzamam-ul-Haq and Australia's Glenn McGrath in the month-long tournament which is being run by Zee TV, an Indian television outfit.

HEADLINE: Lara linked to breakaway Twenty20 league
i do not think the work breakaway is apt.
did AS have one as well ?
In reply to CaribbeanCricket.com
So 2020 is to test cricket what Beach Soccer is to professional football?
Home to retired stars? 8)

Get Lara in a bikini and the LBLs dem will be all over it.
Arawak
One thing that Lara is that the LBLs can't even appreciate is an Entrepreneur. An unabashed capitalist!
Go on Lara. While WIPA got these guys around here going on and on in some union rally you out bulding business and making money. You smart yeah.
Did'nt Lara call this rubbish cricket at one time?
In reply to carl0002
Was it lara or holding ?
money, money, money
In reply to DAVE400 I remember Holding saying so. I agree too. But if it makes money for the players, then why the heck not.
Is this the reason why Lara abruptly "retired" from Test and ODI. But said he never said he retired from 20/20 cricket. As the saying says, Money talks.. ![]()
My god!
Expect to be bombarded with stats once more.
As they say money talks Anand walks...........
In reply to OVAL291 Boy, I am a capitalist like Lara. Let the money roll.
excellent...whether it is lara or whoever i hope it deals excitement..cannot wait for this to roll around.it will probably start with pensioners but if this things take off look for young ones to participate.
In reply to CaribbeanCricket.com
That's it Brian. Go where you are greatly appreciated.
One.
In reply to carl0002
...and your point?
BTW I am not too sure if Lara said so but I believe that Holding did.
two...(oops now see Dave400)....three.....
In reply to ends
You are an idiot!
Show me the money!
Its all about the moola 8)
I have no problem with him making that decision,he is no longer on any contractual obligation to the WICB but I hope he remembers where he started and was given the opportunity to acquire his fame when the time comes for him to represent Trinidad or serve the West Indies in whatever role they choose to offer him.
Let's hope he doesn't become ungrateful like so many other ex-players and just walk away from home completely.
This also shows how smart the Indians are they wil pay him big money to make him happy but at the same time they are using his expertise to groom young players for the future.
In reply to dravid
Some walked away, but most were ignored by WICB. And you realise that the Indians are intelligent enough to know that having Lara around their players will improve their game.
WICB had Lara for 17 years and never tried to utilise him to improve their financial condition. They were more concerned about strengthening the cabal.
In reply to dcbreds
Well lets wish lara and the indians well.
Unfortunately, having lara around WI players didn`t help them to improve so he may make a better contribution to the indian players, so we wish them well.
As longa s lara stays away from WI cricket, its good for all concerned.
In reply to dcbreds
I agree some were ignored but most walked away with their earnings and never looked back. The main reasons why some were ignored was because of their immature behaviour, they feel as though they should be paid for everything they do or were asked to do and most importantly because of what we refer to as crabs in a barrel, this is main reason why the Caribbean has remained a group of third world countries.
We in the Caribbean don't see eye to eye and so are the players from different countries.
We simply don't complement or assist each other.
As far as utalising him goes he was given all he ever wanted, hell they kicked Carl Hooper aside to accomodiate his demands and yet he proved unfruitful to the team.
His last 2 stints as captain were the best opportunities he could ever asked for being the only senior player in a team of youngsters and yet he failed to inspire them because there was no difference in their relationship on or off the field.
There was no defined line between fun and buisness.
Again, players like Lara, Warne & McGrath are worth their weight in gold to a start up with money but no tradition on their side because they provide the one thing a start up league needs above aanything else: Instant credibility.
That's why, to my mind, this was always a liklihood.
However, there's stills ome ways to go before this Zee league becomes a reality. The BCCI will fight like cray to prevent their competition fom establishing a foothold.
In many ways this Zee 20/20 thing mirrors Stanford's vision with our own 20/20 competition.
In reply to garyg
You can lead a horse to water man. Some of these idiots never even tried to learn. Whenever Lara had problems he would try to get help from others like Gary Sobers. This pathetic bunch believed that no one could tell them what to do cause they are not children.
I assure you the Indian players will lap up anything he has to say because he commands that level of respect and admiration.
In reply to dravid
Firstly, those who asked have every right to ask because they were screwed by WICB during their entire cricketing career. Clearly you are unaware of the issues about being paid on time while those on the Board had far less problems getting from WICB.
Secondly, Lara was leading a bunch of immature schoolboys. They did not want to work hard or improve their skills. They wanted to be lectured by none of our greats.
Carl Hooper was not kicked aside for Lara. That is another long story - suffice it to say that Lara was appointed skipper but was not supported by all in WICB. That has ALWAYS been the problem during his 3 tenures, and therefore he never received the support he needed. As a result of this, those under his charge never accepted him as the legitimate captain.
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh the plot thickens. the beginning of the end of the icc as we know it. very interesting development
I guess this is like David Beckham leaving Real Madrid for Los Angeles Galaxy....
In reply to mikesiva
I guess you are one of the guys that sat on their armchair and shaked their head at beckham.
In reply to sparhawk
Not at all!
:)
Beckham can't make the England team again, so he might as well rake in as many endorsements as he can....
In reply to dcbreds
You may want to believe that Hooper wasn't pushed aside but he was indeed pushed and in the words of the man himself "It felt like looking at a loaded gun"
This all happened because lara campained for captaincy although he said previously he never wanted it again. You know when the fox couldn't get the grapes he said it was sour.
Lastly again I refuse to agree that the players never respected lara,it's just that he was equally insubordinate as his team.
But I wil never question his commitment to batting because he was obsessed about breaking/setting records.
Follow de leda.
In reply to dravid
as his team. Follow de leda.
Some of these sad staements worry me- are you from the Caribbean - insubordinate? Lara? Listen, during Viv's reign, what do you think? The Board has never been perfect, even good- Didn't youy understand that what was Gordon was trying to tell you - how sad, that a myth morphs into a reality. FC led the way in fighting the establishment as well- Maybe we should start a WIBC-BL group - All in the LHC immediately qualify
In reply to jaydee
Yes bro I am from the Caribbean, don't worry about the name and finally we need to face and facts and accept them as they are if we want to move forward.
I am sure the WICB was never perfect and never will be but with that said in the past with the same imperfect board we did better as a team and region in this beloved sport of ours.
Again I would like to reiterate the players need to adjust their attitude and approach to this game immediately.
N.B.
I deliberately did not mention the name Lara because it seems to make some of us very defensive although I've never said any offensive about the man nor disrespected his skill and expertise in anyway, shape or form.
In reply to dcbreds I like how youresponded to dravid's first post.
It is no secret where Lara's heart lies. He is all homeboy bound. Remember his Foundation? Many youths are benefitting and many in need of operations even abroad are seeing better days.Arrangement is being made for Schools to visit his home to view his Stock in Trade. That will be awesome. He would play a big part in the Sporting Complex at Tarouba - a huge influence on the nation's youth.
He has already met his Prime Minister to whom he has outlined his plans for service to his country and especially the game cricket. Dravid must get himself au courant by reading news from Lara country.
Concerning Lara's comment on Twenty20: He said his first love is Test Cricket and he would like to preserve his body at his age for that discipline. He did mention though that Twenty20 brings excitement to the Fans and if it is bringing them out to the various grounds, then it should continue.
Well, now that he was no longer required in the Test Arena, he is quite smart enough to go where other smart and sensible ones are willing to use his expertise and his fame. He will be paid and they would gain. According to Debreds, WICB never marketed the Legend simply because they were too dunce to know that they had a legend on their hands. They were never respectful enough towards genius. According to him, the WICB missed the principles of integrity and technology. India is not missing the boat and I agree for him to set sail.
Sail on Lara - you de man of the hour. More people around the world would watch him on Zee TV than the Windies play even Aus at home.
He will be paid handsomely and note without any wars on match tour contract - Hallelujah!
In reply to frangela
They failed to realise the gold mine that Lara was for our game. And they have made every attempt to sully his character. Fortunately, most people around the world did not buy it cause they know otherwise. Lara is respected AROUND THE WORLD and will be welcomed in every country.
He was never crass about other countries and never disrespected his own players. He attacked WICB with justification tho.
In reply to dcbreds
I would rather you speak the truth and be honest about mr lara man.
Richie richardson and Cuddy Yes?
Others like ridley spoke of lara`s effect. lara vs franklyn rose et al.
How could you make a statement like that DC?
You refuse to speak about mr waite, umpires, groundsmen who suffered too.
So please be onjective boss.
Mr Lara is a legend as a batter but recall he was booed in OZ?
Recall that after the Trinis were eliminated from WC footie irate fans said Yorke, lara and latas should be banished to a whorehouse?
So obviously Mr lara was no angel but in can be annoying when people try to paint a picture he was otherwise. Same applies for warne yes? legendary but controversial as was maradona.
Recall lara isn`t exactly ambassador Walsh.
Lets keep it real no man?
I wouldn`t say samy or gayle are ambassadors either and are above criticsm. Don`t let insularity cloud your judgement man.
Frangella should agree with me on this one.
In reply to garyg
What a pile of crap. Lara criticised any of these players when he was captain? In fact, I cannot remember Lara attacking any cricketer even when he was not.
And allyuh does only post one side. What about Lara's side of the stories? Why don't you post what they all said? Why not post what people like Banks and Browne said? Even Crossy tried to get Lara to respond to the criticisms and he refused, because he did not want to stoop to their level. But he has his side of the story too, but allyuh so biased allyuh eh care about the second and third sides to the stories.
Yuh know what? I fuhget who I am talking to. Go head, multiple. Say yuh crap. I eh have time fuh yuh lies tonite.
In reply to dcbreds
Come on DC do better. Who was it that told Richie Richardson that just like how het got rid of dennis waite he would get rid of him too?
But if lara publicly disrespected umpires and groundsmen who could be his father, why wouldn`t he disrespect players of his age who he had conflicts with?
Lara may not want to respond since he knows its true.
Lara alos went into OZ players dressing room, must have done wrong why he was booed by oz fans. OZ cappo called him an antogonist et al.
So come on DC. Not giving lara a hard time but pointing out where he fell down and it will be futile for you to try and paint a picture as if lara is an angel man.
Its even said that he even undermined logie when logie was tnt cappo.
Come on DC, do better man.
In reply to garyg
Once again, you continue to post lies, rumours and innuendo. I am really tired of you guys doing this all the time. I know the truth in a lot of these situations and, quite frankly, your statements are sensational and overblown at best. Of course he had disagreement with players but HE never made them public, esp those times he was right. And you won't here about those because those who were wrong were ashamed to make these events public.
I could say more, but I am beginning to realise more and more that trying to provide facts on here is more the exception than the rule. No one ever called Lara a saint but I know a lot od what he did and did not do. But if believing what you wrote makes you feel good then go right ahead. The other side will come out in due course. I will await your reaction then.
In reply to Kurt The Zee Venture is much different from Stanford's in that Zee has world Stars in spin and fast bowling, batting and even the genius of a living legend. Because of their credibility to the game Zee has to pay them handsomely just to appear whereas Stanford did not pay his minnows for appearance.
More people would watch this Zee TV game than the ICC games. People love stars not apprentices.
In reply to dcbreds
I actually read it in the media where lara told the WI cappo that he would get rid of him as he would with dennis waite.
This is not stories made up.
Deal with it.
Saying he was disappointed he wasn`t cappon when cuddy was cappo was also a disrespect to the legendray cuddy too.
Cuddy protected him from boos at bina too. Its alos clear Richie ain`t happy with him. And the situations regarding him mand sammy and Rose maybe worse than we can imagine. so don`t come with that dc. if lara didn`t disrespect his elders publicly, you would say its a lie too.
You must lear to accept the truth DC, espcially when its steering you in the face.
You have disappointed me DC.
publicly disrespecting elders even supersedes vdirespecting players in private
In reply to garyg
I could live if you are disappointed. I just do not buy your lies and rumours. You also do not post all the facts. But, as I said, I will not try to persuade you.
However, I will await your response when ALL the facts come out. Why do I say that? Cause I know more of the facts than what you posts on here. And of course you are quoting from lies so are posting lies.
I am not disappointed tho, cause I expect nothing better from you. You are only too willing to post stuff even when you do not have FULL KNOWLEDGE. I will save this thread tho, cause I want to bring it back to remind you of the crap you posted.
In reply to dcbreds You taking on garyg? You have time. Garyg is subjected and one track minded.
Debreds, as you would know, genius is obviously out of the ordinary. These are people who do not think like you and me. In the Legend's case, his game was part of his own inner make up - his aptitude was born from his attitude. In a genius, one cannot divorce output from input. There is no space.
We on the other hand, as Fans, cannot like those boundaries from good balls, the risky friskies and fiesties and at the same time want him to be this calm thick skinned person who will bow the hat everytime Sir, Mam, Thank you Lamb and Jam. Then we would have only limitations like we are in ourselves. Remember, this is a man who surpassed the great Viv Richards who himself said the Legend 'is greater than I ever was.'
Lara's personality is one and the same with his batsmanship. It made and continues to make his batsmanship. He is thin-skinned, so the impetus for the gully shots; he is confident in his risks, so the placement to the boundary; he knows the genius within, and so when riled up he is apt to teach you a lesson - Waugh, dont mess wid meh head, take dat - bam, down to de boundary and off he goes gardening, wilfully ignoring the pains on the bowler's face. Hit him on his head: What? You mad, he will quietly (cunningly) take his guard and bam, next ball, go field it in the boundary. That is the entertainer. But no, garyg wants a priest not a genius. You cant have both. The only priest who ws genius is Jesus Christ.
Lara has a very strong personality borne out of his confidence to take the chances and he therefore cannot understand mediocre attitudes. Such gets him mad and he would react to such and to the indiscipline that goes with it. But garyg wants him to pamper the players. Have it your way garyg. He has gone from the likes of you and is in places where he is adored.
I am so happy for him.
In reply to frangela
Man, that is another brilliant post. If I did not know better, I would think that we are related. 8)
You are also 100% correct about this:
I was talking about this yesterday but some on here do not understand. I am not surprised. 8)
In reply to dcbreds
Look nah De breds, dont rile up the genius in me by pretending. So you dont know we are related?
You forget we have the same father, just different mothers. Well we told them Happy mother's Day today. Great.
Father's Day, we both would tell our daddy: "Happy father's Day Almighty God, our Father"
Garyg knoweth not him - too stupid to be of our breed, eh breds?
In reply to frangela
  Oh gosh man. Ah was laughing at the idiot posts all night. For once ah laughing cause somebody post something good funny.
In reply to dcbreds
You know how much people I ketch wid that.
I use it to break the ice. And thinking about it, it is not funny. It is really a fact.
I like it though. I call it my personal 277 but sometimes I call it my 153.
I use it as my 400 when in the restaurants.
Dont ask me when I use it as my 501 eh. One word: Angie!
She got me stumped. But the other day, she walked. I asked wha happen. She said 'caught behind' I won and was glad until garyg came and got me soured here. Ole yardie fool.
Have you heard from Amnesaic recently. I dont see postings of late! May be forget!
Well, we still here. You and your brother!
Going to call Angie now and then retire. Hard life 3000 miles apart - may be worse if I follow Lara to India.
In reply to frangela
You taking on garyg? You have time. Garyg is subjected and one track minded.
Nice. You see how rude and disrespectful he is when the trutrh hits him?
I don`t think lara is much better either.
I provided the facts re Walsh, Richardson, Ridley, umpire, groundsm,en and could you forget disrespecting the team sponsor too?, i mentioned deniis waite previously.
There was the OZ booing, the Trini fans dissing him, allan donald drving him out of dressing room in rsa.
And then there are "indications" re the rose, elegance beatings into retirement, there was hoopsie complaining about backstabbing etc.
I don`t think any other player in WI history or probably the worl;d with so many charges against them and what about the unreported ones.
Not giving the lad a hard time but just like how Dc has the weakness of being rude when faced iwth situations, it seems like his boss had similar or even larger weaknesses.
Finally inspite of public reports and past players being bitter towards lara you hear Dc talking about he never disrepected players and he has no facts to prove he did not. Providing reports are true, i don`t thimk rose , elegance et al would want to beat a player without him dissing them( not that i endorse the alleged beatings).
So expect Dc to behave like redB when the truth hits and be rude and refusing to obey me and show manners and respectfully disagree.
He can try and run from the truth but cannot hide.
The truth causes an offence but its not a sin.
If he had humbly accepted the obvious failings , i wouldn`t have had to dig up so many things.
Getting him to admit the truth is like pulling teeth you see.
In reply to garyg
u r da best man..........lash dem
In reply to OVAL291
Getting them to accept the truth that is steering them in their faces has been quite a challenge though. Accepting the truth gracefully is certainly not their strong point.
Beating the LPa into shape isn`t that easy when they respond to the truth in that way. It takes time and patience.
In reply to garyg
Oz u talking abt now to prove something abt Brian. man u must be some idiot to use Oz. Afterall we know hoe well some of the Oz players have behaved. only an idiot like yuh will use Oz when u need them dont you ? I know you would be slamming them if they said anything against yuh beloved yardies.
then u talking of Dwight Yorke and then Brian. fucking that has no link. all you do is hate Brian and link others with him.
coming back to Richardson, why dont yuh ask him how he sent Richards out and fought with his fellow Antiguans. wanna to elaborate on dat ? moron.
Brian ensured lot of insecure idiots like Richardson and morons around him fighting.
without Brian WI would long have been dead. go look at the WI team and see how good it is. it's ironic dat morons like yuh appreeciate poor quality low quality people and anyone who's above that is hated.
afterall yuh expect people to sing praises on ground staff who prepare pitches dat last 3 days doh u ? dat shows the quality u have an ass and insular person who sees nothing wrong with the yardies but everything wrong with Brian.
In reply to frangela
Well said. Mediocre insular people like Garyg rarely think the world exists beyond de yard doh dey ? morons.
In reply to dravid
When you claim that Lara was obsessed about breaking records, I want to tell you that you come across idiotic indeed.
No batsman can go to the wicket and accomplish a record all his own. There must be direct contribution from the opponents and the games judiciary - what they all give in terms of their mistakes, inefficiency and negligence. That is sports for you Sir.
One man wins the hundred metres, breaks the world or olympic record and hear him say he could not do it all on his own; the man coming in after him is the one who pushed him to the time breaker.
Write from Stats!
Whilst Lara has gotten the most unfortunate LBWs (others would say tief out) like all other batsmen, he would benefit from an appeal turned down when it could have gone against him. He was clever enough to say, sometimes the ruling go against you but it balances eventually in the career scale as he knows many times other LBWs could have gone against him in some great innings he played:
Lets talk now about umpires and opponents failures:
The 400* When on nought a decision could have gone against him - caught behind and no one would feel undone for it was so very close. From TV replay the decision was correct. But he could have been given out. So there you go, the games fortune visited him. No obsession could have saved him.
The 213 When on 44 he was dropped. Could it truly be said he came to the wicket and scored what he willed or on his own carried through his obsession for a double century or as some fool said, because he was on probation he scored a double. Fact remains the opponents contributed or else he would have been back in the pavilion on 44.
The epic 153* He was dropped in its ending and Windies would have lost the match. So, did he by some obsession cause the keeper to drop him?
Obsessed by rass yuh hear!
In reply to frangela
In reply to dravid
Well he was still the best on the team...so?
In reply to garyg
Strange that Lara and Cuddy seem to have a pretty decent relationship despite all that he has allegedly heaped on him.
In reply to garyg
All I can say about Ridley is that unlike all these other children he went out and did his best and performed despite all that he encountered with Lara. Everything that happened within the team stayed in the team until he retired he did not lessen his performance or scream that Lara did this or that and that that stopped him working on his game or developing himself as a cricketer.
The facts are that under Richards and Lloyd cricketers made the same type of statements about their leadership styles.
About Richardson and Walsh they were default captains and knew it but Richardson for some reason felt he was better than the bumbling idiot that he presented to the cricketers and us. You seem to conveniently forget the upcry when he was named captain and the cries of derision by all with every decision he made. The fact is if not Lara some other confident cricketer would have said they could do better than him.
