Women’s T20 cricket tournament yesterday at Providence as Stefanie Taylor’s classy 62, a delightful unbeaten 64 from Shemaine Campbelle and Hayley Matthews’ 27 & 4-17 were the highlights of the day which culminated with Guyana playing the debutants Leeward Islands under lights.
A handful of fans watched the poorly promoted night game in which the host won by 55-runs as West Indies batter Campbelle played brilliantly in her unbeaten 64 from 56 balls with seven boundaries and shared in 111 second wicket stand with Melanie Henry who hit a responsible 34 from 54 balls with a single four to see Guyana to 138-2 off their 20 allotted overs.
Skipper Shawnisha Hector again bowled with pace on the slow track and took 2-26 for the Windwards who were restricted to 83-9 from 20 overs as only two batters reached double figures. Erva Giddings finished with 4-15.
Guyana won the toss and batted in windy conditions and lost Latoya Smith (2) when she was removed in the third over by the impressive Hector who plays with the boys in Antigua.
The pint size Campbelle marched to the crease at 9-1 and stamped her authority right away against a team who played only Windball and Tapeball ball cricket before this tournament.
