Brian Lara

Just call him Dr. Brian Lara.

The West Indies captain has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Sheffield in the U.K. for his achievements on and off the cricket field.

Lara received the honour at a degree ceremony in his native Trinidad & Tobago this week.

In addition to his record-breaking prowess as a batsman, the university said Lara is being celebrated for his humanitarian contributions to Trinidad and Tobago and the rest of Caribbean.

Lara has established the Pearl and Bunty Lara Foundation, a charitable organisation which he set up in memory of his parents to address health and social care issues that were close to their hearts.

He is also Ambassador for Sport for the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, travelling on a diplomatic passport to promote his country throughout the world.

Earlier this week, Lara attached his name to the Brian Lara Cancer Treatment Centre of Trinidad and Tobago, a new, state-of-the-art medical facility.
