Warrington Phillip found guilty of murder
Former Nevis and Leeward Islands cricketer Warrington Phillip has been found guilty of murdering his wife, Shermel Phillip.According to reports out of the Caribbean, a twelve-member jury returned a guilty verdict late Friday voting 11-1 after two hours of deliberations bringing a close to the one week trial. Phillip was arrested and charged for the crime that was committed in February last year. The couple had been married for four years but was estranged, when Mrs. Phillips’ body was found in her car in the yard of her Brown Hill home, on February 16. Her throat had been cut. She was 27.
An autopsy performed a few days later revealed that she died of shock and hemorrhage resulting from stab wounds to the neck. Her husband was charged the following day. Mrs. Phillips was the daughter of Kaiso legend Keith “Dis n’ Dat” Scarborough.
According to reports, Justice Ianthea Octave set Monday 12th December for the receipt of psychiatric and social evaluations of Mr. Phillip, and Monday December 22nd 2008 as the day of sentencing.
Phillip has appeared in 43 first-class matches and last played for his home island of Nevis in the inaugural Stanford 20/20 in 2006.
