Sad news. I remember the John Holt performing "Sweetie Come Brush Me" at the Sports Hall in Georgetown around 1980, that was the first concert that I attended.

RIP indeed. I never heard him live, but he was a great singer from our golden age of crooners. Few of them left now. Even sadder is that there are very few identifiable replacements.

So why did he say he was doing fine?

Par for the course is show biz!

When Bob Marley collapsed in NY, and was given a few weeks to live, his record company released a statement that he was suffering from "'exhaustion".

Bob even appeared on radio to dismiss 'rumours' that he was sick.

R.I.P. John Holt. The first 45 I ever bought as a teenager was 'Ali Baba' by the Paragons. His voice had a quality that just appealed to me.
Still listen regularly to his live performance backed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Check this vid from the same concert with the LPO . For me this is his greatest tune and this version, with the full, lush strings and brass of the LPO in counterpoint to the percolating keyboards and Lloydie on bass, is reggae at it's finest!

Desmond Dekker, Alton, Gregory and now John Holt ......legends all gone.

Who leave .....Ken Boothe, Toots, Leroy Sibbles, Beres ....?

When this generation of singers pass, who will step into their boots and carry on the tradition of great reggae singers? There are many good artistes out there but not many good singers.

Taurus Riley and Romain Virgo are genuine contenders. But who else will carry the torch that these legends have borne all these years ....?

YES YES YEES ... JB ... that's the one I was looking for but I had limited time before starting a meeting i was running and hadd to settle for the one i put up ... Jah Bless!! Tenks ... is the other day I played that for an american friend and him ask who dat sound so good .... that recording is WICKED stuff!! And John 'the man" Holt was in spendiferous form - elegance and all.

A true legend has passed ... believe that .... his days as a paragon was great, but man his solo career rose to higher "Ites, Gold and Green".

Right now ... I don't feel many of the upcoming newcomers (and some are good) have the voice range of a john Holt ... not yet!!!

Thanks for "The Memories by The Score".
"Stick By Me & I Will Stick By You", wicked tune. Yes, it was 1971, and the first time I ever called a radio station to request a song and Winston Barnes obliged with this monster hit, that Saturday night.

I am sure that you recall that A Love I Can Feel is an old Temptations' song that John covered.

He really was outstanding in doing cover version. His cover of the Four Tops' Left With A Broken Heart is one of my favourites songs of his.

I would have to say John Holt.

Among his most prominent albums, 1000 Volts of Holt & Fistful of Holt, he had almost all covers.

I must say he did them all justice and even improved on the originals!!

Our singers are notorious for covering foreign tunes ....notorious!

And if you ask me, btwn the reggae-fication of the beat and the natural soul of the vocalist, it very often sounds as good as or better than the original.

Lester Holt Jr. ... related to me and Wackie from his Jamaican mother's side(the Heron/Wilson link up). A few years ago he went 'home" with his mother to JA to visit the homegrown hometown in Manchester/St.Elizabeth area. It was televised via his station some while back.
