Serves no other purpose but to intimidate batsmen.
Now a promising cricketer's life is snuffed out because of it.
It takes no special skill to bowl this delivery and it adds nothing to the game.
It should be banned and bowlers penalized for it.

The short pitched delivery
In reply to nitro
Loud stupes, now comes the fallout and over reaction. How long has this game been around for now? How many fatalities caused by such? Why not change the ball, use tennis aka flannel balls, easy solution.
In reply to nitro
Please don't try to change the game with knee jerk reaction...Short pitch delivery is a big part of the game...this freak accident is very rare....what if a fielder try to catch a pop up and it hit him in de head, would you ask for umpire to adjudge batsman out?
Lets not try to justify anything but mourn in the unfortunate loss of one of our cricketing family!

Please show respect to Phillip and the entire cricket fraternity.
Your comments is inappropriate at this time, there is a time and place for everything and this is certainly not the time.

bro even a tennis ball could hurt you .... wrap them batsmen and close in fielders in bubble wrap....

Have all sorts of Analyst on CNN looking to sell products, get your life saving helmet re-engineered guaranteed to protect life.
In reply to Runs
its the American way...money money money .. helmets would probably be made in China
I still remember Shiv being felled by Brett Lee ... it was distressing to watch
A good solution should be better coaching as to how to deal with short pitched balls. However, what is not being highlighted is that Hughes had a history of having problems with the short pitched ball, that was the reason he lost his place in the Aussie team. But it is a sad story, it is a sad price to pay.

Where ignorane is bliss..................
So before the advent of helmets in cricket did this happen? Hmmm maybe the batsmen in dem days were real better at playing cricket eh! Specially at batting.
Put a flexible flap behind the helmet.
Can be retrofitted on existing helmet.
The material on the outside needs to change.
the plastic structure stays in the middle
Urethane would be a better option.
The short-pitched delivery requires the batsman to use his feet; step back and across, and then determine what to do with the ball.
He can watch it go by, duck, or hook.
But of course, today there are no batsmen... only batters. ugh!

The Short Pitched delivery is the most beautiful ever bowled by a bowler; it is the ultimate test of the bowler to bowl it correctly and accurately, and the batsman to handle it expertly. Any action by cricket officials to ban this ace in the game will be grossly irrational , an overt over-reaction to a freakish accident. Next they will have to ban the Forward Short Leg position for fear of a smash to the fielder's face; bowlers will have to bowl with helmets fearing a return missile from Gayles bat; Fielders trying to catch high flyers will have protective head gear; umpires will have to be in cages; everyone will have to be in a bubble
.
Accept it for what it is a Freak Accident. Lets move on with the game; remove the bouncer restrictions.

Nitro is unique, yet consistent in this way. He's only poster who can be consistently inappopriate whether in Back Room or the Rum Shop.
Eliminating short pitch deliveries from bowlers arsenal are not the corrective action to prevent serious injuries /death in the gentlemen sport
In every sport protecting the athlete/ athletes should be paramount. Am not an export in sport-gears designing, but Ill be sufficed if engineers can redesign cricket helmets to preclude the injury which cause the death of Mr. Hughes from reoccurring
The NFL over the years have been working diligently with their helmets manufactures to make helmets to prevent concussions or to lessen impact severity
In reply to nitro
It is a tactic used by many bowlers
It can be dangerous, but it is a vital part of the game
In reply to Cricket_101 He didnt get hit in ghe head as was first believed. Batsmen could get hit in the throat too you know and die from it. Could get hit over the heart and die from it. There are freakish occurances at times. People choke on bits of food etc. These things occur every now and then
In reply to Dan_De_Lyan
You can prepare your players to absorb the hit (MAYBE !!!) The superior strategy is to learn how to negotiate bouncers.
Go watch people who know how to handle these: Hunte, Sobers, Fredericks, IVA, Richardson, Carlisle Best, etc.
People who cyan hook should learn how to get out de way. Yuh remember Wavell getting licked down by a retired Big Bird ?
In reply to nitro
should they also ban full toss, just as dangerous?

Lemme ask you this.
THOUSANDS of people die every single day on the roads but I do not hear you calling for engineers to design cars so that no matter what people don't die on the roads.
The injury to Phil Hughes was EXCEPTIONALLY RARE.It has NEVER taken place in cricket and there are a mere 100 cases in the history of medicine, yet you want engineers to design something to prevent that????

You have ah better chance of being struck by lightning
