HEADLINE: Shiv Fate Hangs In Balance

CaribbeanCricket.com 2015-05-21 07:04:03

West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) president Dave Cameron said the public should know within days whether Shivnarine Chanderpaul has a future with the West Indies team.

The 40-year-old Chanderpaul, affectionately referred to as 'Tiger', is the second highest run-scorer in West Indies Test history with 11,867 runs - including 30 centuries - at an average of 51.37. However, in his last 11 innings, the Tiger has been toothless in scoring just 183 runs - 91 in five innings against South Africa and 92 in six against England.

He recently met with members of the Windies hierarchy to discuss his future with the team.

Cameron told The Gleaner yesterday he was unable to disclose how those discussions turned out.

When Dave opens his mouth nothing good happens. it's just his way of saying things.

I'd say, the balance is heavily against Shiv.

At least Shiv is being treated with deep dignity, unlike some of his previous counterparts. At any rate, this ought to be a very simple decision- Shiv must quit or the selectors must quit him if he won't voluntarily do do.

No one more match to make beat the record will suffice. He had 4 test matches to do so and now its time to move on. We have a real chance to beat or draw the Aussie series and we cannot compromise the team for any one individual.

Before the England series no one was touted as his replacement and there was little campaign to replace him.

So why now must he not be given one last series.

Because he was a pitiful failure in the last series and there is no evidence he can do better in the next. Finito wink

I prefer to give Shiv one more year over giving Gayle another series.
I also thing the Shiv should play until all batting hole is filled.
We need another opener to settle in. Or we can promote Blackwood to open if we decide to play and extra bowler and since Holder can play the all rounder role.

There is nothing more ignominious/ humiliating than a great athlete who does not know when to quit – its difficult to walk away – but walk away he must…….otherwise his decline is what he will be remembered for. And in Shiv’s case that would be a darn shame.

I think the WICB has learnt it's lesson. It now has realized that it has to show respect and gratitude to those who have served WI cricket faithfully and well. I only hope the pendulum does not now swing the other way where players well passed their prime decide to hold the board ransom by continuing to hold on, thereby depriving young up and coming players a chance to get into the team.

Doesn't sound good. If nothings new and Shiv is planning to stick around why not say so. Talking about him being at the end of his career is a giveaway that something is in the works. The only question is whether Shiv has already been eased out or whether the Australian series will be his swansong.

West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) president Dave Cameron said the public should know within days whether Shivnarine Chanderpaul has a future with the West Indies team.

I'm hoping that is the author's take on what Cameron's response to the inquiry.

Reading the article...Cameron said no such thing so one has to conclude that the author/editor took it upon themselves to phrase the headline and statement in such a manner.

It is an irresponsible and disrespectful comment to make....regardless of from whom the comment came.

This just appeared on CMC website a few minutes ago...www.cananews.net Chanderpaul deserves special send-off, says Cameron West Indies Cricket Board president, Dave Cameron, says he wants to ensure veteran left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul gets a fitting send-off when his career finally ends. The 40-year-old Chanderpaul is nearing the end of an illustrious career that has seen him garner 11 867 runs from 164 Tests, to be second on the all-time West Indies list behind the superb Brian Lara. Cameron, who in March gained re-election for a second term, said he had not been pleased with how former players had been treated at the end of their careers. “I have never really liked how we have ushered out our players, so as president I am always trying to figure out how to honour them,” he told the Jamaica Gleaner. “We're doing it now on a continuous basis, year by year, for their performances, but at the end of a long and illustrious career like Shivnarine Chanderpaul's we want to ensure that whatever we do, it is well respected and that he knows and the region knows how much we value his services to West Indies cricket.” Much speculation has surrounded Chanderpaul’s recent form. He managed a mere 91 runs against South Africa in three Tests earlier this year and also struggled against England in the recent three Test series with just 92 runs. He requires a further 86 runs to surpass Lara’s record of 11 953 and maybe eyeing the two-Test Australia series beginning next month, as the opportunity to do so. However, Cameron said Chanderpaul recently met with the West Indies hierarchy to discuss his future and more would be revealed in coming days. “Unfortunately, I am not privy to the discussions, but obviously it is where he is at and what are the next steps," Cameron said. “In another couple of days it will be made a lot clearer as to the end result of those discussions or how we go forward.” (CMC) ▶
