Heatwave live: Britain swelters on hottest July

Chrissy 2015-07-01 11:39:34

on record

Here’s what’s been happening so far today:

Heathrow has recorded temperatures of 36.7C, beating the previous record for the month of July from 2006.
It is hotter than Miami, LA, Rome and Barcelona, with Kingston-upon-Thames hotter than Kingston, Jamaica.
The United Nations has urged countries to create better warning systems as a heatwave sweeping western Europe saw temperatures reach 40C.
Speed restrictions have been imposed by Network Rail on some train lines amid fears the metal tracks could buckle.
Health warnings have been issued for elderly and vulnerable people, with relatives and friends urged to check on people they know

This doesn't seem new, though. It seems common for there to be a major heatwave across Europe at some point of the year and many people are just unprepared.

Same in the US, especially the Northeast. Then they have to put out the advisories on staying hydrated, don't spend too much time outdoors, etc.

Extreme weather is the new norm. Global Warming is here to stay.

It's not the same. Residential central air conditioning has been slow to take hold in most parts of Europe because their summers are not supposed to get that hot.

You might say residential central air conditioning is almost non-existent in Guyana but European houses are insulated for the cold so they trap heat and when it gets hot inside it really gets hot.

We call that a "warm summer front" in NYC. Happens about 5 times a year. Nobody panics and dies.

Interesting how you seem to save speaking for all of canada

Canada's west coast has been having much warmer than normal temperatures this spring/summer

It's 30 Celsius today in Vancouver. 35 in the interior. And it's been that way for weeks

Tryangle 2015-07-01 13:08:55

Good timing for this from BBC Sport:

The GB men's hockey team defeated Pakistan 2-1 in their Hockey World League 3 quarter-final this afternoon in Antwerp where the pitchside temperature was recorded at 41 degrees celcius during the game - the hottest day in the city since 1954.

The Pacific Northwest not supposed to be that hot. When I lived out there you couldn't even find apartments with AC.

In one's experience, the frequency of one's ablutions is of less significance to one's comfort, than the frequency of those of one's fellow travellers.

Precisely... tube trains without air-conditioning are like a high school sports changing room in the summer!

Got a good point there. The more packed the vessel, the greater the discomfort level during the steamy months.

Correct. This year has been an anomaly. Although there have been other times in the past where it's been this hot...except...that usually happens in August. First time it's been this hot in May/June

Also...BC's interior (Okanagan Valley) in summer is traditionally scorching hot with 35 degree Celsius plus temperatures the norm. Places like kamloops, Vernon, kelowna, penticton etc. Osoyoos which is further south is the hottest and they have desert landscape like Vegas

This place is colder than Alberta, and on holidays it reminds me of the sixties.
Liquor stores, Super-markets, and Stores all close, with the exception of down-town Toronto.

All windows open and all fans running on highest speed
It hot like hell
Should keep me up for the cricket later

Check this out

Unprecedented June heat scorched portions of four continents during the past week, and many all-time heat records are likely to fall across multiple continents this July as the peak heat of summer arrives for what has been the hottest year in recorded human history. Already on July 1, in Wimbledon, England--site of the classic Wimbledon tennis tournament--players are enduring the city's hottest day in tournament history. The mercury hit 96.3°F (35.7°C) at Kew Gardens, the nearest recording site, topping the previous record of 94.3°F (34.6°C) on June 26, 1976. London's Heathrow Airport has risen to 98.1°F (36.7°C) so far on July 1. This is not only a new all-time July record at that location, but also a July heat record for the UK, topping the previous record of 97.7°F (36.5°C) in Wisley on July 19, 2006.

We've already seen two of the planet's top ten deadliest heat waves in history over the past two months; the Pakistani government announced on Wednesday that the death toll from the brutal June heat wave in Pakistan's largest city, Karachi, had hit 1,250. According to statistics from EM-DAT, the International Disaster Database, this makes the 2015 heat wave in Pakistan the 8th deadliest in world history. The heat wave that hit India in May, claiming approximately 2,500 lives, ranks as the 5th deadliest:

Death Tolls From the 10 Deadliest Heat Waves in World History
1) Europe, 2003: 71,310
2) Russia, 2010: 55,736
3) Europe, 2006: 3,418
4) India, 1998: 2,541
5) India, 2015: 2,500
6) U.S. and Canada, 1936: 1,693
7) U.S., 1980: 1,260
cool Pakistan, 2015: 1,250
9) India, 2003: 1,210
10) India, 2002: 1,030
10) Greece and Turkey, 1987: 1,030

CHRISSY,

LISTEN UP!!

FORGET ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE, ABRUPT CLIMATE CHANGE IS HERE AND NOW!!

THE FACTS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION (1760-1840) THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF THE EARTH HAS INCREASED BY .85%!!

97% OF ALL CLIMATE SCIENTISTS SAY THAT UNLESS WE KEEP THAT INCREASE TO BELOW 2% WE ARE IN DEEP DOO DOO!!!

A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THESE SAY IT SHOULD BE KEPT BELOW 1.5% IN ORDER TO AVOID SOME PRETTY NASTY EFFECTS!!!!!!!

BUSINESS AS USUAL (BAU) WILL LEAD TO AN INCREASE OF AT LEAST 5% (ALL LIFE ON EARTH WILL DISAPPEAR)!!!

THERE IS A 40 YEAR DELAY BETWEEN WHEN CO2 IS RELEASED INTO THE ATMOSPHERE AND WHEN THE IMPACT OF THE RELEASE RESULTS IN AN INCREASE IN TEMPERATURE, THAT IN EFFECT MEANS THAT WE ARE NOW ONLY FEELING THE EFFECTS OF CO2 RELEASED IN 1975!!

IT IS ESTIMATED THAT WE HAVE ANOTHER .60% INCREASE IN TEMPERATURE LOCKED IN FOR THE PERIOD BETWEEN 1975 AND NOW (2015) EVEN IF WE HALT ALL CO2 EMISSIONS TODAY (02.07.15) AND THAT AIN'T GOING TO HAPPEN!!

THAT MEANS AS OF TODAY WE ARE LOCKED IN TO A 1.45% (.85 + .60) INCREASE IN TEMPERATURE WHEN COMPARED TO THE BEGINNING OF THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION!

GUESS WHAT?

BASED ON THE ABOVE WE ARE NOT GOING TO KEEP THE AVERAGE INCREASE BELOW 2% FAR LESS 1.50%, THEREFORE WE ARE IN DEEP DOO DOO!!

WHAT MAKES IT EVEN WORSE ARE THE FEEDBACK LOOPS (THEY ARE MANY, MANY OF THESE) THAT WILL OCCUR AS THE TEMPERATURE GETS WARMER AND WARMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NOW WE SEE WHY THE LIKES OF THE POPE, PRESIDENT OBAMA AND A NUMBER OF WORLD LEADERS ARE ALL CURRENTLY RUNNING AROUND LIKE CHICKENS WITHOUT HEADS FRANTICALLY TRYING TO DRUM UP SUPPORT FOR A SOLUTION!!

IF ONLY............

YES IF ONLY WORLD LEADERS (AND ALL THE OTHER HUMAN INHABITANTS ON EARTH) HAD TAKEN THIS WHOLE THING SERIOUSLY WHEN WARNED MANY, MANY YEARS AGO!!

IT IS NOW TOO LATE!!

LOOK ENJOY YOURSELF IT IS LATER THAN YOU THINK!!!!!!!!

SHEIK
