HEADLINE: Saqlain put my head in place: Bishoo

In the past three years, Devendra Bishoo has represented West Indies only thrice. Despite that, he is among the top five bowlers from the Caribbean who feature in the International Cricket Council’s current list of highest ranked bowlers in Test cricket.

How is that so, some may ask. But the statistic should not surprise those who have closely followed the legspinner’s career, which started with a bang during the 2011 World Cup, plummeted into oblivion after a few poor outings by the next year, and only recently found itself resurrected again – during Australia’s tour to the West Indies.

By September 2011, six months after his One-Day International debut, Bishoo had 21 wickets from five Tests at an average of 35.42, and 19 wickets in 11 ODIs at 21.57, earning him the ICC Emerging Player of the Year award.
But the purple patch did not last, and a series of disappointing stints led to Bishoo’s exclusion from the national squads for all formats by May 2012.

I am very happy to see Bishoo in top form . I have always maintained that in the current crop of spinners , despite domestic statistics he is head and shoulder over ever on else certainly from Guyana and shares the top spinner place maybe with Narine . He started well and did well against Australia . We can only hope he is managed well to see him in our formats for a while .

Bishoo is telling all of us, hard work pays.
He did not sit in a corner and say, why me, he worked daily with his coach.

The manager's role is also key and often overlooked.
