Where are they getting these numbers from?

Yet Antigua and Barbuda had the plug pulled from the its Hawksbills franchise team after two years when the government baulked at the CPL's requirements in spite of the stated return of $13.8 million from three matches in 2014. It was moved to nearby St Kitts as the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots.

Is anyone independently verifying these claims? Are any of the audit companies involved? KPMG anyone?

Grenada put up $500,000 to stage the opening matches in 2014; its government didn't bid again in spite of the $13.3 million CPL said the island gained from the venture.

They could not bid more than likely because IMF would have objected.

That's it right there.

unfortunately, this is how politicians--and even other policymakers--make decisions in the region. First, they make up the numbers.

The problem is that the basic statistics do not exist or are of poor quality and the governments do not fund the development of statistics.

However, even in cases where civil servants present sound numbers, if the policymakers or politicians do not agree they will simply state, "my numbers are different" and dismiss the sound numbers.

Digicel are going public on the NYSE so we will now get accurate accounts on this beyond the PR.

They have no choice.

Has Grenada earned 13.3 million? Has Barbados earned 23.3 million from the CPL? Why arent the Caribean govts questioning these numbers? So after fleecing the Caribbean people, they're moving on to investors. I hope Obrien knows that made up shite does earn u jail time in the usa...

Making up shit also has made millions in the same US.

Of course these countries have not been auditing the statements.

Digicel and telecoms in the caribbean makes up a significant part of the GDP though but that is a separate subject.

They haven't fleeced anyone. The issue for Digicel is that they been financing via bonds and that is getting harder and harder though they have been a constant yield since launch. When you add in the fact that much of their revenue in Jamaica is devalued along with the currency and their costs are in US, you get a picture.

They need lots of money in the new round of corporate wars vs Columbus Comms on cable TV and for once their competitor is cashier than they are.

As for the CPL, an investor driven look at the CPL might kaibosh the whole thing OR it might scale into the US.

Will be fun to watch.

I think there is a bit of confusion there. What digicel is claiming is that these figures represent the amount of economic activity that the CPL has generated.

Of course, that claim is absolute BS and there is absolutely no way whatsoever to substantiate these claims in the Caribbean because the basic Statisitcs that are required to make these estimate are absolute crap.

The only way bit can be substantiated is through looking at hotel and arrivals activity around the schedule and also consumption tax in the same time period.

Given this period is non cruise ship and low season for tourism it should give some activity numbers though you are right that it is a crap shoot.

There is a survey they send out that I caught sight of. They are probably doing some huge extrapolations and economic voodoo to come up with those numbers.

Have you done the survey on the CPL website? Its the same company that does the CPL survey is giving those numbers. Some questions are the variety of "Where you come from, what countries you visited, business or pleasure, how many games, would you invide others, how much money did you spend, and on what, put the amount and the currency you quote". Maybe they are taking those numbers that people submit wholesale.

Where's the ICC? The CPL should be given 2 years to get their house in order, or lose official ICC recognition. Players participating in the CPL should then be banned forthwith from all ICC-sanctioned matches.

Aren't governments supposed to stay out of cricket?

Or, are double standards okay when you are begging for money?

have you seen the prospectus or the SEC filing saying they are going to retire debt with the funds raised? that would be rather unlikely, bet the move is to position for an expansion into the Cuban market.
