How marketable is WI cricket

With the West Indies tour not generating big revenue for the SLC,

In terms of TV broadcasting rights, we will receive [Sri Lankan] Rs 45 million for the West Indies tour, whereas for the tour by Pakistan we received Rs 55 million and the tour by India Rs 300 million," vice-president of the SLC interim committee, Kushil Gunasekera, said.

If you consider the populations of each, the question you should be asking is why is Pakistans broadcasting rights so low. The subscriber base is a huge problem there too.

Consider how TV broadcasting works. WHo is going to buy TV to watch WI play SL in SL.

WI people in the Caribbean (and external) pirate nearly all feeds if they are not free to air and if a broadcaster has to pay for it, they want to generate advertising on the spots, and thats tough to sell to media bookers unless people get to see it for free. Therefore catch22.

The truth is that much like many other things, Caribbean sport is subsidised by other viewers. TV is heavily subsidised everywhere but ad dollars can pay it back. In the Caribbean...tough sell.

Many excellent points proffered, I would guess that ranking is usually the best indicator of product quality. It is difficult to sell a product with no "players the public would pay to see".

If WI were in its heyday right now, the TV rights they would get would be from other countries buying media to see WI play.

Caribbean people would still in the main be a small contributor to that revenue.

A winning team that third parties want to watch will do well. Indian doesnt need to be good. They have a huge audience willing to watch them whether they are crap or good. It falls off after Australia and England which is why there is a big three. They essentially drive all the TV revenue to subsidise our cricket.

The truth is that Our Players currently are below the standard required to be fully competitive in International Cricket .

The recent Tours by Australia & England
proved that fact . Obviously the more competitive a Team is , the more viewers it will get , and people will
flock to the venue to see competitive
Teams playing Cricket .

Unfortunately our Team is not competitive , therefore its share of
the revenue when on Tour aint going to be spectacular .

Currently in the longer versions of the game , the fact is that Our Team is a Bottom Dweller .

What must be done is not really Rocket Science , it is simply to make
our Players fully competitive in the
International Cricket Arena .

Sponsors , love not only Winners ; but also love being associated with
Winners .Unfortunately this fact is lost on those in the governance of Cricket in the Region .

Was chatting at lunch today with my Pakistani and Indian associates when the discussion turned to India's first away win in years, and the fact that the Lankans have been beaten at home in three straight series.

One of them said that the Lankans just have to wait until the West Indies tour to finally put an end to that home losing streak.

Embarrassing. redface redface

But I guess I deserve it all. During the West Indies heyday, I certainly used to make my Indian friends have it.
