Windows 10, what's the verdict?

Yamfoot 2015-10-07 18:50:46

This thread went into archive. Who has tried 10? How is it? That notification keeps popping up on my computer.

Let me know what your experience has been.

Can I ask a question: Does everything currently work perfectly well on your current 8.1 computer ?

Seems I was a little harsh on the UI of Windows 10. It works. But I have seen people have lots of issues with the upgrade process and there is a decent chance something breaks.

Funny story I bought a new DELL and assumed it had Windows 8.1 but on startup I was greeted with a Windows 10 install. I was talking to someone while it was starting up and I saw a bright blue light. Turned around to see a crash screen.

Works perfect for me. No problems here. Had a few hiccups on the first two days and I ditched Cortana (instinctively since I don't need it) and everything crisp since.....

Exactly as you started. Co-Sign

I Also run Mac OS and Ubuntu in office. Admin is right: Mac is the way to go for simplicity and ease of use.

In the working world in the Caribbean - it is still a Windows driven environment, so dear Yammy may not have an option.

Yammy:

what is your current setup and what is your system specs. In Windows World: It is much better than 8.1 in terms of interface. Performance wise, I can't see in-app differences. So what motivates your upgrade is important to know.

XP was the last of the great windows OS platforms - everything else since XP has Windows playing catch up to the fluid simplicity of Mac.

It's best sometimes to not be leading edge to minimize risk to yourself. Wait for about 6 months to a year before even considering an upgrade like this.

Not everyone can afford a MAC, so that's why windows will still go well in these parts. Personally I always feel never go for windows latest OS until a year or so after release. Too many bugs at first.

Anyhow Yammie, get a computer with an intel i5 and 6 GB RAM and windows 8 will still do the business. big grin

I have had no problem with it since I upgraded from Windows 7 . In their ads
they seem to be saying that windows 10 is going to be here for many years .

I have not investigated why yet? But across our campus the Technology Services folks have advised NOT TO update/upgrade to 10 until they give the GREEN thumb. Pretty sure it is related to PROBABLE/POSSIBLE INCOMPATIBILITIES with the vast and varying other softwares running in this complex environment.

So what they do is have it TEST RUNNING on a few computers under their controlled environment to SEE what breaks or NOT and figure fixes. So the basic Windows Enterprise Professional with 8.## upgrades/updates is what is Working and working well ...

But ... Ryan is right go MAC and don't come BACK if its your personal/business computing.

Commie 2015-10-08 16:44:09

Dont worry with them Bourgois MAc ppl.

Windows 10 is very nice. Its the dodgy hardware standards that MS have to deal with across a plethora of providers.

Apple on the hand is only dealing with Apple.

Get the XPS lappies or the new Surface Pro. Nice stuff.

Wndows 10 is easily MS most decent upgrade and is a pretty solid OS...actually it's more efficient and runs faster on than Win 8 or 7 believe it or not...

I have an old rinky dinky laptop with 2GB RAM that I was literally going to throw out. I decided to use it as my test bed for the Win 10 upgrade and voila the machine actually works faster and I can do meaningful work on it.

After that I upgraded all of my home computers and zero complaints thus far...

Most upgrade issues have to do with incompatible antivirus from my experience...for example Kaspersky and McAfee didn't work with Windows 10 when I last checked...

I salute apple for successfully creating a bunch of drones who believe that MAC and everything apple is the best...

The OS is great.

What MS is having to juggle is way more difficult. With the right hardware, its a superior solution.

Works perfectly fine for me. Haven't had any problems. I use some oldie but goldie audio programs that either I had to install in compatibility mode or just run the executable as administrator but that was about it. Only thing I don't like is how it updates. Descriptions of updates are a bit vague to say the least. I bought my software and did a clean install because I just built a new computer. I wouldn't run shouting and prancing in the streets about it but it works for me.

There are numerous privacy issues which over time could be cause for concern.

The os appears to be quite stable and upgrading was a piece of cake.

It is free now, expect to pay in the very near future or face the consequence of a total shut down.

I do miss the iconic my computer icon and other quick fix icons that have been renamed or simply sent to pastures new. The taskbar is not my friend,I miss my desktop clutter

The edge browser is blindingly fast and overall it is not as resource hungry as some of its predecessors

The ditching of the win 8.0 & 8.1 app inspired metro screen gets a thumbs up from me.

compared to the mac OS ? no comparison really the mac OS is a class apart.

On the whole change is good and I wont be too hard on Microsoft ..... they were the catalyst for making the digital age accessible to the masses

Yammy – here is a link to step you thru building an access database

No windows 10 for me – at least not yet. Still running 7 on my desktop, 8 on my laptop, which I only use when I travel, and not excited about it

Commie,
Have you taken care of all the privacy issues and opted out of Cortana? What about all the stuff 10 sends to MS and storing your info in the cloud?

A disturbing thing happened too. Word is that MS in a clandestine way, back-filled 7 and 8 with some of the same privacy breaking stuff in 10. I presume they are trying to say to people that if they are staying on 7 or 8 to avoid the pitfalls in 10, that those same pitfalls are now in 7 and 8 so no reason to stay there! Wah!

Let me tell you a secret.

It is very likely that there are keyloggers in nearly every OS.

Apple is a huge culprit and even Linux is vulnerable.

If I were doing dodgy business I wouldnt be talking about it on a computer or a phone. Silent Circle and RedPhone are useful as is TOR, but its still like trying to use the highway to outrun the chasing police.

One day 'disconnecting' and going to a Luddite existence will become a rage.

You may be right but now Congress is even taking up the 'issue' of whether encryption should be outlawed!!!!!!! That will kill everything if they ever implement such a thing and all this will be mute because we wont even need any middle men with sniffers, zero days or anything to be invaded and the bad guys with the ransom ware will go crazy.

First I must apologize for reviving this 3-week old thread (MarcusGarveyLives anyone?).

I've been happily using my Windows 10 and wondering what you guys were going on about. That was until the Case of the disappearing Edge.

Two days ago, Edge disappeared along with the Windows task bar. As it turned out, these symptoms are not unique and are well documented on several sites, including Microsoft's. The recommendation is to re-install Windows 10.

As promised, everything was back to normal after the (many hours) re-installation.

Well, that was until this morning when I discovered that Edge was once again gone missing.

Now, I'm forced to use Chrome. I hate Chrome!
