A major change to the English game this week, as the ECB announced that it is going to scrap the toss in the county championship next season, instead offering the away side the right to choose whether to field first. The idea is that it will encourage better pitches, and do more to bring spin bowlers into the game. As with all new things, it has split opinion, with the Yorkshire skipper, Andrew Gale, calling it absolute madness. The Spins own view is that cricket has always been a more mutable game than many allow and that it is better to risk failure by trying than to do nothing at all. No sense saying something must be done about pitches and spinners, then grumbling when it finally is.
