Did Barbados drop the ball?

analyst-kid 2016-02-21 12:54:34

At present THE WI has NO STRIKE BOWLERS.

Roach, the lone World Class strike bowler with a sub 30 ave in Tests and ODIs has regressed to a level where he is almost a non-entity in the bowling line-up.

Taylor,Holder and Carlos are all first change/stock bowlers...not even good ones in Test cricket with Holder and Brathwaite probably more useful in those roles in ODIs.

Barbados right now started the Guyana match with a lone strike pacer in Cummins.

The opportunity was there for the Bajan selectors to expose and develop TWO young pacers in Harding and Chemar Holder yet they opted for the medium pacer in Greaves who was what the WI DIDN'T need with so much of that ilk in abundance.

I recall a Ricardo Elcock and a Milton Small as two rookies in a Barbados team longside Roddy Estwick and Wayne Daniel back in 1983....why has the Barbados selectors gotten so conservative....is winning so paramount in this time?

analyst-kid 2016-02-21 12:58:53

You already have Cummins and Stoute as covers for two young bowlers....Cummins and Stoute are the two leading pacers in the entire tournament.

Why aren't the selectors adventurous enough to expose one or two pacers and aid the WI dearth of effective frontline pacers?

then again this is the same Philo Wallace now Chairman of Selectors who as captain never favored Fidel Edwards playing in a Barbados team....he always deferred to Tino Best.

It was Lara who selected Fidel Edwards.

I think they should have exposed a young pacer I must say...Greaves looks a decent lower order bat but very unthreatening as a bowler. They have been too conservative here.

They now batting too slowly in the second innings... Less than 3 rpo when they trying to set up declaration.

Good sir. Philo is not the chairman of selectors.

Please get your facts right

seaegg99 2016-02-21 13:43:01

Very conservative indeed. No foresight at all.

Harding is 19 and has apparently been impressing in the nets...said to be the quickest in this squad...I haven't seen him so of course it's always difficult to judge but I think I would have been inclined to take a punt on him.

Agree re Holder though...he has so much time..no rush.

These opportunities come along and this selection panel (Wallace, Sherlon Greaves, Henderson Broomes, Henderson Springer (head coach) and Brathwaite), has a view that it gives more opportunities for some of our emerging players and some of our players who are contracted, who are in the system, to get an opportunity to show exactly what they can do at the first-class level," Wallace said in an exclusive interview on the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation's weekly cricket programme Mid Wicket, The Real Cricket Show, on Tuesday night, a couple hours after the team was officially announced.

Chairman or not...Wallace was commenting on selection decisions.

CB mentioned how well Harding looked in the nets. Many greats was given a regional shot in their teens. How old was KB?

As I have said...not seen him ...only reporting what I have read / heard...the attack could do with an injection of pace ..Greaves is military medium...

Commie 2016-02-21 15:43:26

Poor itito might have to tell us the value of Greaves next.

That seems to work.

Good point, also u don't need to rush at 17 into 4 days , if it was T20 or if they were batsmen

tc1 2016-02-21 15:55:35

In reply to seaegg99

Ok, if they were 17 yo batsmen , but 17 yo bowlers, it hard to control their work load and their bodies are still developing . 19 i would not hesitate to give them a try.

moneybrain 2016-02-21 16:11:00

Harding at 19 should be strong enough and is supposedly improving by leaps and bounds in the last 6 months or so. Greaves is not quick enough and supposedly Harding has serious pace. Bim did not require Greaves's batting abilty with Carter and Stoute at 8-9.

Traditionally pacers hunt in packs and Cummins would have had a Psyche boost with Harding's inclusion. cool

hawk 2016-02-21 16:22:57

I have never heard of this Harding guy, and all this in in hindsight, I would never have agreed to playing him ahead of Greaves for this game, but given how Greaves has performed, who knows maybe he will come in for the next, I would urge everyone not to get too excited about rushing Chemar Holder I would rather be patient and allow him to stay with the team always even on the road

seaegg99 2016-02-21 16:27:20

In reply to moneybrain

Agree, Harding's overs could be managed. You would have enough bowlers around him for that. The wicket itself would be of benifit to him.Greaves is just not up to bowling the new ball. This is regional where you can blood young players. Some are reacting like this is test cricket we are discussing here.
