Perry's ex-wife and son are my very good friends. I can't process this one. I know him well.

Six, including two girls, arrested for Prof. Perry Mars’ murder

Less than 24 hours after a Guyana-born American professor was strangled to death at his home in Prashad Nagar, police arrested the key suspects and recovered the items that were stolen from his home.

Head of the Criminal Investigations Department, Senior Superintendent Wendell Blanhum told Demerara Waves Online News that “we have arrested the suspects and they are cooperating with the investigators.”

Professor Perry Mars, 75, was found by his wife with his hands and feet duct taped and injuries to his head in his study at his home on Bissessar Street, Prashad Nagar at about 7 O’clock Thursday night (Thursday, May 12, 2016). “The house was ransacked and a number of articles and cash were missing,” police later said in a statement.

Mars recently re-migrated to Guyana after working mainly at African Studies at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

Six Sophia youths detained, stolen items recovered

Two teenage girls helped three of their male friends to beat, bind and strangle 75-year-old retired professor, Pairadeau Mars, at his Lot 395 Bissessar Street, Prashad Nagar home last night.

Undertakers removing the remains of Professor Mars from the St Joseph Mercy Hospital last night.

The shocking truth was revealed late last night after police captured the entire six-member gang, who reside in Sophia.

The suspects have reportedly admitted to the crime—five of the youths reportedly murdered the man while the sixth was the taxi driver. He was found with some of the stolen items in his possession.

The girls are aged 15 and 17 while the eldest of the males is 18.

The professor wasn't exactly an innocent victim. Read today's Kaieteur News.

The man was playing Spuds.

Poor Ramjattan. Fire and brimstone gets rained down on his head for the crime situation but when you check the reason behind the crimes, which by the way his police force is solving at break neck speed, you realize Guyana needs a Minister of Public Morals more than it needs one for Public Security.

black 2016-05-14 08:56:36

Guyana still doing the death penalty thing? Execute them by firing squad.

"He told the police that his girlfriend told him that the man give her something to drink and then he had sex with her when she became unconscious."

I love this line.

Now she'll get away scot-free.

Family hiring hitmen to kill dey own family. Respected professor corrupting underage girls. Husband staging highway robbery of his own wife.

The people have lost their moral compass. Perhaps your muslim friends will have some ideas.

A note of caution, the Guyanese media are known for sensational journalism and non vetting of sources. I will never conclude based solely on what they print or broadcast. Overseas based Guyanese lap up their reporting and many times come to wrong conclusions and opine as experts on goings on in the land.

You should always be sceptical about what people in position of authority feed to the media. Why would this come out so early? Why the police give out this info? I am still not saying it isn't true but I would be v cautious

Larr Pullo 2016-05-14 12:36:03

Maybe the girls embellished the facts a bit, but it's very likely that the professor was up to shenanigans.

Drapsey 2016-05-14 14:02:04

(Young) women around the world should all be learning from this. If you're drugged and raped (??) then immediately text your boyfriend so that he brings over his friends and rob the perpetrator. If time allows don't forget to suffocate the bastard so he dies.

I forgot, drugged or not, don't forget to leave the door open so as to provide easy access.

Not far from where I live, one of the youths pardoned by Granger,19 years old, is back in policy custody for robbing a money changer this week.

Professor Mars remembered
May 14, 2016

Perry Mars was an outstanding intellectual, and one of the finest political theorists in the Caribbean. He taught at the University of Guyana, which in those days boasted of a teaching faculty rich in talent, with names like Professor Clive Thomas, Professor Joshua Ramsammy, Dr. Harold Lutchman, Dr. Maurice Odle, Professor Bill Carr, and many others of like intellectual stature.

I never missed any of his lectures in Politics 100 because they were so impressive, and what was particularly fascinating was the skillful manner in which he integrated political theories into the real political landscape of Guyana, the Caribbean and the wider world.

I vividly recall his series of lectures on “Violence, Politics and Aggression”, and it is so distressing to note that he would be cut down by a most loathsome act of violence.

Above all, Perry Mars was a fine human being and a humble and affectionate person. He never distanced himself from his students, but was very approachable and had a very likable disposition. He actively encouraged discussion and participation in his classes, and the interaction and debates were very lively and interesting.
.

Sincerely,
CECIL RAMKIRATH

Following the murder of the retired professor, residents expressed their anger Friday when the Guyana Chronicle visited the area. A resident said: “Imagine dis man used to feed the same set of youths that killed and robbed him at his home; almost every day they used to be in his house. They didn’t have to kill him, because he was a really kind person to all.

I don't believe the rumours...this was a good man

Killing of retired professor…Does 17-year-old girl know of another murder?

As of now, investigators are reportedly comparing her finger prints, and those of her friends, with prints found at previous crime scenes.

This newspaper was told that ranks received information that on the day Mars was slain, the 17-year-old girl made statements to the other youths, which suggested that she might have knowledge of another killing.

Detectives believe that if the teen was indeed involved in a previous murder then it might have involved an elderly person, or an individual who lived alone.

There have been numerous unsolved murders of elderly persons, particularly ‘home alone’ women.
