both St Mary men but surely Adams stands head and shoulders over Foster. Yardmen explain?

Why Is Maurice Foster Rated Over Jimmy Adams?
In reply to Raggs
maybe because what is now left in memory is more imagination and fantasy than reality?
In reply to doosra
ok mr poet explain that last statement in a more simple way please
At regional level, he was the man.
Foster was a way better bat than Padams
Not even close
Herbert Chang was also a better bat than Jimmy
1 100 and 1 50 in 25 innings at an average of 30 in intl is not exactly great
i suppose he was a poor man's Hooper and that makes him better than Adams...was it the beauty of his 20s and 30s?
In reply to Raggs
things we forget tend to be way better than things we remember
an inform jimmy above anything that Chang or Foster on their top game. he was more likely to hit a bigger score.

Maybe because Foster did the cricket world a favor by declining the invite to that fateful WI tour of India, thereby freeing up the space for the inimitable Sir Vivian Richards.
And the rest as they say is history.
I still love that patented flick off the pads though, Fos.
In reply to Drapsey
Jimmy got his finger cut too...but did anyone benefit?
In reply to doosra
We might have to ask Chrissy.
Rumor has it that the cut finger resulted from a successful operation to mitigate the wrath of one Frank Rose as being meted out to his captain, BCL.
Because Jimmy was not exciting to watch.
Fos was an aggressive shot maker.
Jimmy a steady accumulator/ solid defender. He survived more than counterattacked.
People have never streamed through the turnstiles or celebrated batsmen like Jimmy
Foster like Carlisle Best later, came along at the wrong time
Windies was brimming with talent.
But that's the problem when the youngsters only have averages to goon..... no context

Herbert Chang...one of the better bats that didn't go all the way but was better than some that did. Chang could bat...remember when he and a very young Dujon both put hundreds in Bim in a shell Shield match early 70s.
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
he played 14 test matches...what's the history?
he didnt do well enough in those 25 innings to command a place?
In reply to doosra
i just remember maurice foster as a good journeyman who when out of regional cricket was seriously out of his depth.
In reply to Raggs
Maurice Foster was Devon Shite before Devon Shite
In reply to Raggs

I do not understand the praises people have for Chang, Basil Williams was a much more consistent batsman at the Test level than both Foster and Chang. Williams was a perfect example of someone who came at the wrong time. Actually he was a much more consistent batsman than Chang at the F/C level also.
In reply to dayne
Chang played one test in India 78/79. How can you get consistence in one match? And contrary to what you said, Chang was very good bat...I remember Bim pace attack demolished yard twice in one day in a shield match and only Chang stood up with 50 in the first innings and 132 in the second. The match was in bim I think.
In reply to doosra
In those days cricket was still very much an amateur sport. Men made a choice of going to English leagues or another career outside cricket. Foster was one of those for whom cricket was a parttime undertaking. Around his time the counties were opening up and the professional cricketers like Lloyd were taking over Windies team. Fellows like foster were being shut out.
In reply to Raggs
To me, it's all about Test cricket....
Adams - 54 Tests, average 41.26
Foster - 14 Tests, average 30.52
No contest...Adams by a country mile.
In reply to mikesiva
Foster was an FC Bully
In reply to Raggs
Foster by miles, not even close
In reply to Wally-1
ok, I tend to agree with that
In reply to Wally-1
the same you will say for Samuels tho he'd barely ever passed 35 avg in test cricket
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
dont see how this explains the point u made about not enough opportunities
In reply to doosra
Ok.
In reply to anandgb You left out the most salient factor in that FC bully opinion. He made all those runs against the best regional bowling attacks. Bearing in mind that in those days all the top players played Shell Shield, and you were not going to make the WI without playing in it.
An aside- If you are Guyanese, the old Jamaican adage applies:"He who feels it, knows it".(Of course I am talking about the runs against Guyana).
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy Fuzzy, last night I made similar observations, but lost my post in transmission, my WiFi kept going on and off. His detractors cannot countenance the fact that he made the WI team on merit. He was probably one of the last amateurs. He was not fortunate enough to get that extended run.Whilst the WI teams he played on consisted of a majority of professionals.
On each of his two (2) WI tours to England he declined county contracts.
On an ALM flight from Kingston to Curacao, many years ago, he regaled us(My two c-workers and I)for about 2 hours with some of his Jamaica and WI cricket stories/memories.
