Classy youth cricketers who didn't debut for WI
Rafiq Khan
Sherwin Praag R.I.P.
In reply to Runs
Paul Persaud
Gajanand Singh
Latchman Bhamsingh
Samuel Haye
These come to mind:
Sam Morgan
Richard DeSouza
Lindel Wright
In reply to JoeGrine
remember William, can't remember Samuel!
Vishal Nagamootoo
This youth never got a chance at the top. Really good servant at regional level. I thought he was better than David Williams, Junior Murray and Courtney Browne.
Eugene Antoine and Russel Elvin
Hard working pace men who used to get wickets in Trinidad (a place no fast bowlers liked playing). I thought if Nixon McClean, Cameron Cuffy, Sandford, Marlon Black and Dillon got to play, these boys should have gotten a chance.
Anil Balliram
Born at in the wrong era. Would have been a shoe-in at this present time.
Tamar Lambert
If Sammy made WI team as a specialist captain, Tamar could consider himself to be unlucky. Lead Jamaica over a period of dominance, year after year, in 4-day cricket.
In reply to camos
William Haye excelled in the Sugar Estate cricket.
Samuel Haye played for Jamaica U-19 and JDF
Sudesh Dhanieram
Another one like Anil Balliram who was born at the wrong time.
Incidently he went on to play for USA while his brother, Sunil, played for Canada after both of them ended playing for Guyana
In reply to Prako
What about George ferris and Anthony meyrick??
Mark Neita
Tyrone Etwaroo
In reply to Anandram
You remember who else played with Tyrone Etwaroo when he played WI Youth? Sam Haye was one.
Tyrone fell away in FC cricket was suspect to fast bowling
In reply to JoeGrine
Do you remember who else played alongside Sam Haye when he played WI youth (Agatha Christie Tour summer of '7. Tyrone Etwaroo was one.
In reply to JamMack
If memory serves me right and I could be wrong...
Carlisle Best
Marlon Tucker
Winston Davis
The late Samuel "Test" Haye could have gone all the way.
In reply to JoeGrine
Yes Haye was a really really good batsman, but not very smart in his choices.
If I recall the original WI Youth squad in 1978.
From Guyana: Keshwar Persaud, Ian Grant, Nagamooto & Tyrone Etwaroo.
From Barbados: Franklyn "Cookie" Stephenson, Henderson Roach, Leslie Reifer and Carlisle Best,
From Trinidad: Jumadeen
From Islands: Lewis, Austin Whyte, Winston Davis
From Jamaica: Haye, Earle Melbourne, Marlon Tucker & me.
In reply to Bigzinc
Ferrs and Merrick all fall into the categories of Anthony Gray, Eugene Antoine and Russell Elvin.
They are from an era where WI could have had 2 test teams. In the WI today those guys would fit in easily.
They were a good back up to the 4 prong attack but the issue is the 4 prong never broke down so they never got a chance
In reply to JoeGrine
Carlisle Best couldn't make the team because of Haynes and Greenidge. At that time Barbados had the 3 best opening batsmen and best bowling attack in WORLD cricket
And after Greenidge and Haynes retired, Carlisle was old as well so we ended up with a trio of Sherwin Campbell, Stuart Williams and Phil Simmons
In reply to JamMack
Remind me of where Melbourne went to school was it TG?
Who is "me"?
Agreed on Haye making poor choices which derailed his career, just like "Danny Germs"
In reply to Prako
Carlisle played 8 test matches
In reply to Narper
He did not deliver and was dropped
In reply to Runs
This thread is about who didn't debut for WI ...not who failed
In reply to Prako
you are joking about vishaul nagamattoo right?
In reply to JoeGrine
Definitely was not TG. He"Jelly" played for Camperdown and Melbourne Club.
Me is JamMack . Played for Calabar & Kingston Club.
In reply to Narper
Guess that should have been directed to Joe, I was just commenting on him. Am fully aware of the topic.
Let me add Rab Seeram
In reply to JamMack
Did not realize Melbourne went C'down, same team with Chito?
Figured you for CHS "Mack" gave you away. Guiste played ahead of you?
Renaldo Parris dominated at U19 level along with Xavier Marshall. After that, he disappeared.
In reply to JoeGrine
Yep you figured me out. No Guise and I played at the same time. I was picked as the starter and 3 games into the tour I got injured (freak accident) and Guise was called up to be my replacement. When I google my name with cricket after my name I see the old scorecards in England.
In reply to JamMack
I do remember your meteoric rise as a "keeper, I used to kid my CHS brethren (one of them the reserve goal keeper on the winning Manning Cup team) "since when 'bar have cricketers". You were pretty much all they had.
Kudos to you Sir!
the biggest disappointment is ANDRE PERCIVAL
In reply to JoeGrine
Can't remember Chito. I know Percy was their fast bowler.
In reply to JamMack
Anthony Chito was their top spinner, played against him at the Colts level, I do not remember Percy. It escapes me that Melbourne played for C'down. They like C'bar were football schools absent any cricket reputation.
Did you not play some football also?
In reply to navindesigns
you are joking about vishaul nagamattoo right?
During the 1995/2005 decade only Ridley Jacobs was better than Vish. That is another reason why spinners weren't given a run because with Keepers like Junior Murray and Browne they had no idea how to keep close up to the stumps
Marlon Tucker. Had cricket brains before the other Jamaican Fatman.
In reply to JoeGrine
Thank you Sir. I was in a club where my keeping was allowed to develop even though the same club also had Dujon and A Campbell as members and we all played on same Senior Cup team. We rotated the WKeeping duties.
I know after me we had N Perry at CHS.
In reply to JamMack
Perry was the other CHS "aberration" LOL. Yes, "Ulie" Campbell (surprised he did not progress to the international level)would have definitely kept you at bay.
In reply to Raggs
What about Mark Neita?
In reply to JoeGrine
Yes. Football too. Top goal scorer for Colts team. Team with man like Nangle and Sewell on forward line with me. Hutchinson was our goal keeper.
In reply to JamMack
Gregory Sewell and Kendis Nangle. Was Gary "Washy" Bogle on that Colts team as well?
Do you remember Border? Thought he would have been your goal keeper.
In reply to Narper
Mark Neita was very unlucky in fact could be the most unluckiest of dem all.
In reply to Narper
In addition to some of the others mentioned:
Diego Gordon
Leslie Reifer
Ozzie Dacosta
In reply to Raggs
Peter "Dove" Martson - he went the football route, what a cricketer!
Jeff McLeod - he went the track route
Richard Seymour Newman - he went the track route, only man to beat Juantorena in 1977.
In reply to JoeGrine
Washy Bogle was the year after me. I don't remember Border. Our gkeeper was Anthony "Flunie" Hutchinson. He was also a quality left arm orthodox spinner who finished up at XLCR and eventually a lecturer at UWI. The Top goal keepers in school at the time were Dave "Broadie" Stewart, then Flunie until Dellie arrived. Those were the top 3 keeps at school back in my days.
I started wicket keeping by accident. Our Wkeeper got hit in the throat during Colts cricket practice so I picked up the gloves. Rest is history..
In reply to JamMack
I do remember "Flunie". Norman Scott should be on your goalkeeper list, he backed up "Delly" Taylor when C'bar won. I actually thought he was a better 'keeper than Delly.
In reply to JoeGrine
In reply to Raggs
Nieta was a very good regional bat and certainly in the runnings for a call up in the 80s
In reply to Bigzinc
Really?
Call up to WI?
In reply to Runs
What I mean was that if there was a vacancy, Nieta was a worthy pick.
In reply to Bigzinc
what about Franklin Stevenson...a real quality player
Has anyone said Hylton Gordon?
In reply to JoeGrine
Seymour Newman it was felt was better than Holding.
In reply to archangel
remember about 3 Gordons at STATS I think cant remember them individually.
Hartley Alleyne, Emmerson Trotman, Andrew Jackman, Ralston Otto,
In reply to Runs
didn't Best score 180th in his last test!
In reply to Narper
and scored a nice 116 against england
In reply to Prako
Do you mean Giles Antoine. I don't think he could play for West Indies.
In reply to methodic
was it 180 or 116 ?
In reply to camos
Carol Gordon & Hylton "Pancho" Gordon.......related
John "Peas Head" Gordon
Colin Gordon (also related to Carol & Poncho)left StATHS and played on the winning TG team with Hackett
In reply to archangel
So was McLeod, most experts ranked them McLeod, Newman and Holding though you could flip the first two.
In reply to JoeGrine
thanks bro!
In reply to camos
Carlisle played 8 test matches
and scored a nice 116 against england
He used to do his own audible commentary at the crease...as he batted
In reply to Bigzinc
Surely would have made the WI team
Stats
WI should have fielded 2 test teams. The B team would have done quite well also I feel.
In reply to JoeGrine
Colin Gordon not related to Carol and Pancho. Right arm wrist spinner in my era.
In reply to JamMack
Thanks for the correction, was led to believe they were.
In reply to camos
might have been 116 but that was the game that cost him his test career.
I remembered watching the ODI (I think it was against England) when he was on 99 and went for 2 runs.
He made the 1st, and got his century, but got run out coming back for the 2nd
Roland Holder?
Lots of very promising regional youths did not continue on the play for the West Indies. Many from Guyana emigrated to North America during the difficult "socialist" years.
Some that come to mind include: Gopie Beasmonie, Babu Sankar.
In reply to Norm
Remember Kennedy Venkersammy?
In reply to JamMack
I always wondered what ever became of you. I won an argument just the other day with someone when I told him you had captained the Benson and Hedges team and he disputed it.
My most memorable game against Calabar in a Tappan Cup when Sharpie almost killed us in the deteriorating light. We were Sunlight Cup teammates the following year when he transferred.
You were easily the best wicketkeeper I played againot during either Sunlight or colt. Flunie and I both attended Swallowed Primary and we later joined forces again when he came to Excelsior. Plus, both our mothers were nurses at Victoria Jubilee.
In reply to JoeGrine
Yes, Hylton was the left arm orthodox spinning all rounder.
The Ventura brothers.
Alan Rae son.
In reply to archangel
Were you at school when Holding wrecked us for something like 30 odd after conceding probably 14 runs in his first over?
In reply to Narper
He and I have had interesting conversations, related to information on my website.
Here is what I have about him.
Here is Gopie Beasmonie and Babu Sankar.
In reply to jacksprat
Yes, I was there.
He bowled from what could be called the southern end off the long run.
'Ulie' was my Cappo for almost six years here.. very good wicket keeper and a handy batsman...all in all a very nice person!
My fellow Muddies brethren- allyuh know one Deonarine Persaud from Berbice?
In reply to WestDem
Parish was an excellent youth player.
Sen Gopaul
Deleted
Ah watched Larry Cunningham, Terrence Cork, "Packer" Barrett and John Eugene play some years back and wondered why they didn go further.
Mervyn Richards was reputed to have been a better bat dan Viv but cudn seem to get it together in LI cricket. On the practice ground he was a terror but ah suppose he was more interested in football where he terrorized many a defender
In reply to JoeGrine
Usain Bolt could have easily been a WI pacer with his speed and height, not a bad batsman too. Nehemiah Perry and Odean Brown two top class spinners who never got called up for WI despite great regional performances.
In reply to archangel
Andy Weekes, what a player better than David
In reply to Narper
Richard Staple and Delroy Morgan...
In reply to Narper
he was some player
In reply to Bigzinc
Ferris was seriously quick and Merrick was a very good bowler. They came at the wrong time and would have been successful test cricketers.
In reply to Slipfeeler
Perry played test cricket.
In reply to archangel
Victor Eddy.
In reply to Narper
John Eugene
In reply to Runs
bammas in the states, right?
In reply to JoeGrine
you talking about joe guiste? very good all round cricketer.
In reply to jcveletta
yep
In reply to WestDem
Deonarine went to England with the wi u19 team i think
his son played for guyana some years ago (Hemant Poonoo)
In reply to doosra
Both father and son together with the Etwaroo brothers represented Port Mourant in the NY Commonwealth League. It was an honor for me to play against guys of such calibre back in the late 90's, early 2000's. By then they were middle aged guys, more interested in partaking in the after cricket and even during the match liquid activities in the players huts.
Us younger guys were tired of hearing about their glory days and relished getting their wickets or hitting their bowling out of the park, no due respect was shown, sad I must admit hindsight now being 20/20
In reply to JamMack
A few Southern Windwards players.
Peter Thomas...Grenada
Swing bowler topped bowling averages in his U19 WI outing. Big swinger and accurate a Bernard Julien type bowler.
Yet for the senior team Combined islands preferred Hugh Gore.
Peter left for England.
Colville Brown St.Vincent.. there is no real logical reason why a batsman this good didnt reach West Indies. Windwards quota politics stiffed him.
Albert Texiera, St. Vincent, who left for the US with family as a teenager and for years made a ton of runs in the US leagues. Including against visiting WI bowlers.
Always wondered what would have happened if he stayed.
POINT has detailed well the mis Management of the Vincentian Kenroy "invisible man" Peters.
Paul Smith, off spinner Grenada, toured OZ with U19, early 90s (around Lara's time i beieve.)
Did very well down under, came home and couldn't break into the Grenada side controlled by the St.Georges Cabal. No Grenada, No Windwards, No where to go. He played years later when he was all washed up.
In reply to Norm
One of the best in NY club cricket in the 70s Kennedy
Steve Mahon
John Sylvester
Kester Sylvester
In reply to Tagwa1
Gore ws actually a very good left arm swing bowler at youth level. Ah doh tink he took cricket seriously even after being recommended to Somerset by Viv
In reply to Cheeks
DID Mahon make WEST INDIES youth team?
Steve was a classy bat.
In reply to Narper
Mark Narper
Nolan Clarke
In reply to shivnotout
As a schoolboy...around 14 years old ...I was a better batsman than Mark Harper...he told me so
In reply to Narper
And look where you ended , posting on CC . Com
In reply to FanAttick
Delroy Morgan would've walked into the West Indies team now. Just unfortunate for him that he came in the era of Greenidge and Haynes.
In reply to spider
You can say the same for lots of other batsmen during that era such as Luther Kelly, Livingstone Lawrence, Lockhart Sebastien.....
In reply to Narper
Paul P from Canada?
Romain Etwaru
In reply to tc1
And look where you ended , posting on CC . Com
Ended?
Do you think posting on cc.com is my occupation and profession?
I will put it this way...on a daily basis I make a direct and tangible contribution to people's lives...people from all over the world.
CC.com is my home for relaxation and fun.
And I do enjoy posting here about cricket
In reply to Dan_De_Lyan
I believe he lives in US
In reply to Narper
There was a Canadian named Paul Persaud and had a brother named Martin....not the same guy?
In reply to Dan_De_Lyan
Really don't know my boy.
In reply to Narper
