It's 4.5 years since I bought the Sony Vaio. It's showing signs of aging....slowing down, not as sharp etc. So I will be changing it in 2017.
Need recommendations (except Macbook cause I'm with Arawak on that one) for good brands. Specs
1. Fast processor
2. Lots of storage
3. Light enough because I move it up and down a lot
4. Fan NOT at the bottom
5. Durable
6. Not Windoze 8 or 10. I have still continued to use whatever version of Windows there was before the Windoze 8
7. Not more than US$1,000

I hope Headley is asleep!
You can't have it your way, so time to make compromises.
When you say:
1. No Macbook
2. Not Windoze 8 or 10
Sorry: In 2017, that is not possible.
You can't buy a new laptop without either:
1. Windows 10
2. Mac OS
3. Chrome OS (Chromebook)
4. Linux Variant.
(the last two I would not recommend for you)
Because you are familiar with 'windoze' and wish to stick with it, you have no choice (get over it promptly) but to buy Windows 10 as an OS if you wish a NEW laptop. Microsoft has made it virtually impossible to buy a GOOD new laptop with anything other than Windows 10.
Getting past that, I would recommend Lenovo I7 with at least 8GB Ram, touchscreen (for you to swipe through the extensive selfie collection) and a hard drive to your accommodate your media/document needs.
Here is a quick example
If you want to have a simplified, stress-less experience: go Mac

These guys will sell you an Intel Core I-7 processor based laptop with Windows 7 Pro OS (with the Windows 10 license included).
This particular model is a bit expensive, but they might have other less expensive models on offer.
Give them a try.

The fact that that system comes with a DVD drive (really!) and Windows 7 and a weight of 5.40lbs should be enough red flag to say: Dell is still off-loading 2013 Inventory!!! Also: only one USB 3 port: not gonna cut it.
Don't do it. No Dell. Not 3 years ago. Not today. Yes it's Window 7, which came out eons ago.... am, NO! that is not the way to go, not because dodo says that's what she wants...

Oh yes, I forgot. Very important. I need 4 USB ports. I have a lot of stuff to plug in sometimes.
Leveno????
Not same as Lenovo????
Look at this baby.

I need a laptop that will give me at least 4 - 5 years

I just bought a nephew the HP HP Envy x360 2-in-1 15.6" Touch-Screen Laptop - Intel Core i7 ... I think its a decent machine
Take a look

Was never drawn to HP products

Lenovo Ideapad. Thin and light, has 4 USB ports including USB 3.0 for faster data transfers, HDMI port and an SD card slot for expanded storage.

2GB Memory won't do for me.
In reply to Yamfoot
Not beinfg a techie I did not visit this post, but I decided to check just in case you were posting any revealing selfies.
Now I see Pelon and these techies trying to interest you in 'liteweight and underspecd' equipment. Just what I would expect from dem techies. Anyway my dear yuh seem to be insisting on high performance so I am reassured.
In reply to Yamfoot
Huh? I don't know what you are looking at but my IdeaPad is packing 8GB of memory, an Intel Core I7 processor and a 232 GB SSD.
Check out the U430 model.

Name brand on laptops today is more snob appeal than consequential

Try Dell.com
Select Products, Laptops and Determine if it for home use or work use.
Not only will you get a dependable device for the price range you are looking for but you can actually pick your preferences to suit your needs and create your own version of the Laptop you are looking for.
For example you can choose Touch screen or Non Touch screen, and a variety of processors from AMD to Intel core i7
These machines typically provide 1 TB of hard drive space and 8 to 12 or 16 or more GB of RAM
Pelon is right. This is 2017 and you cannot have your cake and eat it too.
I recommend windows 10. Comes with a bunch of apps but once you get accustomed to that you do not want any of the previous versions.
In reply to Yamfoot
Windows 7 stopped getting mainstream support and will stop getting security updates in 2020. Any new PC will come with W10.
One way to free up a USB port is to use a Bluetooth mouse. The laptops you are being recommended have Bluetooth.
Why do you want the fan not at the bottom?
But most importantly you didn't say what it is for.
Microsoft Surface Pro! 4 or 5. You won't regret it.
Mek the sacrifice and buy a mac pro - u get 10 years or more out of dat and no regret!
I receently bought hp envy with 16 gb ram. Works well..powerful lightweight.
At work i have been buying dells..very sturdy
Lenovo and asus are cheaper and prob as good
go Mac(no pun intended)
you wont go back

All good .... but
Really!!! Are you looking at refurbished?
no fast drive? Thats the usual bottleneck slowing down a computer. You must have SSD!
oops, there goes your $1k budget!
In reply to Larr Pullo
That's expensive
In reply to Kay
So I have to up the budget?
In reply to Yamfoot
What is this for?
Ultimately one should not suggest a sports car if your line of work requires a truck.
I got myself an HP ultrabook
then there's the elite but those costs a lot more
Techies how come weight is being discussed but size is not specified? Are we talking 15 plus inches weighing 5 plus lbs or 13 - 14 inches weighing less than 3.5 lbs?
In reply to Headley
Bigger yet slim profile.
It's is possible, and yes Yammi we only talking laptops
In reply to pelon
I would imagine that since Yammie travels a lot she needs a slim profile (to match her new profile) so that I can take for granted. But the weight is key. Anything over 3.5 pounds is a lot when travelling is involved.
BTW you need to fix that cough. 'Cerossie' bush is good and staying out of the night dew will help.
In reply to Headley
You are correct. Need lighter load and more inches. Had a toshiba in the early uears which felt like I was lifting weighta.
In reply to Yamfoot
In reply to Headley
Watch how you bandying about "inches" dey..careful nick may be around..
So no more recommendations?
I got this baby last November after consulting with the experts in this same backroom. At the time the price tag was $2,999 so it has dropped a bit since.
Everything about this little package is GREAT and you never feel like putting it down once you log on. Lightweight, speed, power while handling all the multitasking you will ever need to do.
Only issue is the webcam which is at the bottom left of the screen since they couldn't fit it at the top in order to maximise screen size. I bought a Logitech C615 fold and go cam as a backup just in case.
In reply to Kay
Tenks but mi cannot afford dat.
