Lots of good batsmen these days running their mouth to the media at first opportunity.

Sometimes it's better to just shut up and bat.

JoeGrine 2017-03-09 19:13:04

NZ best ever batsman!

Current top bats:

1) Williamson
2) Smith

Yep! He is right there with the Smiths, Roots, and Kohlis of today. Make no mistake about that.

Yes Ma'am, couldn't agree more!

Khaga 2017-03-09 20:34:47

Steady batsman with no noteworthy achievement as captain..

Priapus 2017-03-09 20:48:35

In reply to Khaga

Yeah you right because being a steady batsman is not good enough unless you are captain as well.
BTW how did Tendy fare during his stints as Captain?

Khaga 2017-03-09 20:53:35

In reply to Priapus

Better than Lara..

Priapus 2017-03-09 20:58:19

In reply to Khaga

Really? How many ICC tournaments he won as Captain?

Emir 2017-03-09 21:05:30

Cricinfo was critical of him today but he is a really good batter.

Khaga 2017-03-09 21:34:57

In reply to Priapus

He didn't captain in any..Way less whitewashes than Lara..

Are achievements as captain mandatory to be accepted as a good/great batsman?

CricketLuva4 2017-03-27 00:08:46

Shut up and bat....

No.17

I think that I'm turning into Devin.

It as evident as Day and night that Kohli, Smith, Root and Williamson are the bad boys of modern cricket. Smith leading the pack in tests, Kohli ah beast in Limited Overs, Root is a great all round player in all formats. Williamson gets runs in limited overs at a good clip with no fuss. All classy in their own way!

tis over

the question 'can Kane make it his summer or something' just before the test

well we have an answer, almost

JoeGrine 2017-03-28 12:21:30

I cannot think of 5 other batsmen in cricket history who like Williamson has all the time in the world to play each delivery.

He is a joy to watch at the wicket.

Andy99 2017-03-28 14:31:20

The good thing is the 4 of them, Root, Kohli, Kane and Smith, keep upping one another. No one of the 4 is truly the best for too long.
Just when u think this one moves ahead the other leapfrogs him.

AB has fallen out of the discussion because of injuries and also he isn't as dedicated and driven as them I would say.

CricketLuva4 2017-03-28 14:51:58

In reply to Andy99

Yep, they each have their own charm about them too.

Root I rank slightly behind, as he only has 11 test hundreds. Smith has 20, Kane 17, Kohli 16.

Smith has fairly separated himself as the best of the bunch in tests, much like Kohli has in ODIs and t20Is.

Interesting stat on Williamson - He has 15 hundreds at #3, the team's score he has come in at in these 15 has been:

1) 4/1
2) 57/1
3) 19/1
4) 9/1
5) 1/1
6) 51/1
7) 75/1
8 ) 148/1 (Eng)
9) 56/1
10) 6/1
11) 4/1
12) 169/1 (Zim)
13) 32/1
14) 15/1
15) 83/1

He's a #3 in arguably the hardest place in the world to be a #3, and has the weakest team out of the fabulous four. Very rarely does he come in with the openers having done their job, and only twice has he come in with his side firmly on top.

Personally Kane is my Favorite.
Kohli determination, domination and temperament ranks just below Kane for me.

Smith below those 3 and Root last.

But statistically you can't choose.

doosra 2017-03-28 15:49:54

In reply to Andy99

except

If you separate ODIs Kohli is very much ahead statistically

and Smith with his 60+ and his 100 conversion rate

Andy99 2017-03-28 15:53:39

In reply to doosra

If you break down in formats then yeah you can get leaders, Smith in Test and Kohli in ODIs and T20s but I'm talking about all 3 combined.

Andy99 2017-03-28 15:54:52

How's this for a stat, since 2008, Ab de Villers has scored 14629 runs at an average of 53 and S/R of 76 in all formats.

CricketLuva4 2017-03-29 06:53:40

In reply to Andy99

IMHO I don't like using combined averages, definitely not when you give equal weight to all 3 formats. Smith deserves recognition for his superiority in tests, as does Kohli in ODIs.

If you go based on combined records, does Kohli not stand out by far because he has at least 15 more ODI hundreds than any of them?
