For the record Phil Edwards from then British Guiana won five Olympic medals long before di rest of allyuh - 1928, 1932 and 1936. He ran for Canada.
Gilkes had a very good chance to win the sprint double in 76 but Guyana pulled out of the Olympics. Gllkes beat the field at the Manley games shortly after.

Seeing that you have to go so far back in history underlines the point in my first comment

A nice run after all those false starts....
Next step, get your time closer to 10 seconds. There is a long list of those who don't transition from junior to senior athletes well.
Anyone remember Dexter Lee?

Then how does that count? He was Canadian getting trained by his fellow Canadians. Did he even remember where Guyana was located?

You feel he was going to beat DQ in the deuce? At what level did Gilkes win a double? He was going to start at the OLYs?
Manley games? lol.
What are you on sis?

If that's his PB (and with a +1.8 wind at that) then he'd have to wheel and come again since DQ had been running below 20 up until 1976. True, DQ ran 20.22 in the final in 76 but I believe it was pure 20.4s and such Gilkes was running around then.
Yes, he had a shot to win, like all others in the race, but the only 'very good' chance he had was to win a medal.
