The Once Beautiful Bourda Ground

Take a look at its current state in this Youtube video.

A few partisan political views expressed in the video, but the facts about Bourda's condition are there for all to see.

They don't play cricket here anymore so why not break down everything instead of having it deteriorate into an eyesore...

They don't play cricket here anymore

They still play regional (fc, List A, WI youth, etc), Guyana county and first division cricket here regularly, but the ground no longer gets international matches, and therefore does not receive substantial funding from either CWI or the Guyana government.

In the old and not-so-old days, the Georgetown Cricket Club, the owners of Bourda, was seen as the bastion of colonial and elite interests in Guyana. Most Guyanese were not allowed to become members of GCC, but any white, or "honorary white" person was always welcome, even for free.

Hence, lots of tears are not being shed over this situation. Nevertheless, you would think that the Guyana government and citizens in general would appreciate Bourda's significance to the country's history. The only thing many foreigners know about Guyana is "Bourda"!

Bourda, the symbol of the oldest cricket club in the West Indies is crumbling, just like West Indies cricket. Would they both be allowed to crumble beyond the point of no return?
