Windies (Playing XI):

Narper 2017-08-17 08:12:04

England

The hosts have opted to hand Stoneman his maiden Test cap and he will slot in to replace Keaton Jennings, who has been in wretched form in recent times, having scored just 127 runs in the recently-concluded four-match Test series against South Africa. Also, England resisted the temptation to play Chris Woakes, who is back fit after a side strain and there is no spot for legspinner Mason Crane as yet.

Narper 2017-08-17 08:12:38

Windies

Windies must decide whether to play legspinner Devendra Bishoo or go in with a four-man seam attack as they did against Derbyshire. Given the likely good nature of the surface, Bishoo, who averages 37 in Tests, may get the nod which would mean 20-year-old quick Alzarri missing out. Shannon Gabriel, much improved over the last year, will lead the attack with Roach who would be playing his first Test since January 2016.

No Bishoo or Gabriel.

England batting first.

With Gabriel still not at 100%. Will not argue about the eleven. It is good that Bishoo is sitting down.

Finally, some serious WI cricket...win or lose.

Tough luck on Gabriel but good team tho with available resources.

In reply to solidrock
Begs the question many were asking. If he is not fit why bring him on tour to play him one match when passed fit and break down again. Gabriel may be quick but from Test series debut he lasts one or two Tests before pulling up lame.

After some morning rain, the sun is shining in Birmingham although there is a slight chill in the air. The crowd is building nicely and it should be a fascinating match

2.1
Roach to Stoneman, out Bowled!! Knocked him over. What a delivery from Roach. That's McGrath to Lara in the 1999 World Cup. Pitches around middle and then seams away like a demon, moves past the bat

Stoneman b Roach 8(6) [4s-2]

2.1 Roach to Stoneman, OUT, what a delivery, takes off stump! That's a gem, a good length, pitches at middle and nips past the outside edge to take the top of off stump

Six boundaries in four overs

Reckon England will reach 350 tonight

Narper 2017-08-17 09:26:46

3.5
Alzarri Joseph to Cook, FOUR, beautiful shot and it's four from the time it left the bat. Not a half-volley, but look at the footwork by Cook, to time that through cover. Leant forward and just allowed a full bat flow and once it hit the middle of the bat, there's no stopping that

3.6
Alzarri Joseph to Cook, FOUR, Alzarri Joseph should learn and learn quickly. Fraction short and outside off, Cook won't miss out there, cuts hard and into the gap, wide of gully and that's the third boundary of the over for Cook. Alzarri Joseph should know that he is bowling to Cook's strengths and if he keeps doing that, then the runs will flow

5.1
Alzarri Joseph to Cook, FOUR, another four for Cook. Was not a bad ball by Alzarri Joseph, just a length delivery on the stumps, Cook opens the face of the bat on the back foot block, guides it wide of the diving gully and since third man is vacant, it's another boundary for Cook

Cook has taken a liking for Al Jo

Narper 2017-08-17 09:28:00

4.1
Roach to Westley, FOUR, Westley is off the mark with a delightful straight drive. Roach went full, but a bit too full this time, so Westley could come forward and time the drive past the non-striker and the stumps. Brilliant shot

5.4
Alzarri Joseph to Westley, FOUR, Alzarri Joseph has been leaking runs

7.3 W Cummins to Westley, OUT, full, nips back is lbw! Started with huge appeal for which Erasmus gave not out. Holder calls for a review. A full delivery nips back and Westley misses as he drives. This looks very good. Low down on the front pad. And it's clattering into middle and leg. Three reds.

Roston Chase to Root, FOUR, flighted ball well outside off and Root lunges forward and flings his arms into the drive through the covers. The stride was huge to ensure he reached as close as possible to the pitch of the ball and then let the hands to do the talking

Faulty logic....

The assumption was that the dew would make it harder for the spinner to hold the ball. But what they didn't consider is that in the summer, the sun don't set until bout 9pm in the UK in August...so nuff running after our four prong. The dew not going come into the reckoning until the final session.

Only Courtney Browne would think that Miguel Cummins is a better Test bowler than Bishoo.

Alzarri Joseph to Cook, FOUR, you can't bowl there to this guy. He will punish you all day. Bit of width outside off from a shortened length and Cook latches onto it by waiting for the ball on the back foot and cutting it backward of square on the off-side. There was a fielder at deep point. He ended up being a mere spectator

Sincerely, the most painful thing (and there are many) watching this cricket match are the demeaning remarks sometimes made by English commentators about our players. I cannot get use to commentators using innuendos about our players. Even when some comments are true...just the vinegar in some comments sting very much.

Roach to Root, out Bowled!! Wow! There's the breakthrough. Kemar Roach is pumped and rightly so. The last half hour was helping the pacers and Roach produced the right ball. Full and angling in at the sticks, Root looks to play the expansive drive and pays the price. Doesn't account for the inward movement and gets beaten on the inside edge. Crashes into the stumps. Anyway, end of a fine knock from the England skipper

Kraigg Brathwaite to Malan, 1 run, dropped! It was a tough one to be honest. It was slightly short and wide outside off, Malan decides to go hard on his cut. The nick is found, but the ball deflected off the keeper's gloves making it difficult for the first slip fielder - Blackwood - to grasp it.

Holder withdraws from bowling at the last moment. He is holding his groin/thigh. And guess what? He is walking off. Lets hope it isn't serious. This could be blessing in disguise for Windies if they take the new ball and allow their best bowlers to have a go at the English batsmen. Well, they don't think like me.

Roach to Cook, FOUR, this is typical Cook! Short of a length ball that nips away outside off, Cook opens his bat-face and plays with soft hands. He ensures that it doesn't carry to the slip fielders. This time, finds the gap and the ball races away

93.6
Holder to Cook, FOUR, gully dives again, can't get there this time. Was an inswinger, found the edge as Cook went on the back foot to block, played it with soft hands, so the edge went down quickly and split the cordon. Even a dive from gully wasn't enough

Roach to Malan, FOUR, that's the way to put the half-volleys away. On a bent knee and timed the cajones off that. Saw the delivery and then his eyes lit up, still had to hit the gap which he did with minimum fuss and maximum timing. Not a limb moved in the field

100.1

112.2
Roach to Cook, FOUR, 200 for Alastair Cook. What an easy 200. Compared to his other three efforts of over 200. But take nothing away from the innings. I can't recollect an instance of a half-chance in that innings, let alone a full one. Granted a few controlled edges went through the cordon, but he hasn't put a foot wrong. Typical Cook innings - showing monumental powers of concentration, discipline and putting the bad balls away. There were a lot of them mind and he didn't miss out. After a lean run against South Africa, the Cook of old is back and back with a bang. Time to fill your boots against a pedestrain, second-rate Windies attack with another couple of games to go in the summer. This is how he got there to the landmark: what a shambles that is from the third man fielder! Sums up Windies very well - that piece of fielding.

A full and swinging delivery outside off, lured Cook into the drive, away from the body, went through the vacant gully position and it was just one, but Joseph is nutmegged and it runs away for four. Cook sticks his tongue out and takes in all the applause from the crowd and his mates. Had a wry smile on his face as he waved the bat to all corners of the Edgbaston crowd. He certainly looks happier, without the pressures of captaincy

Roston Chase to Malan, out Caught by Blackwood!! Edged and gone. Is that lunch as well? It could well be. Yes it is. End of Malan. Not the most pleasing of fifties, but he has gritted it out there, would feel desperately unlucky to get out just before the break. Roston Chase lands one in the right area, outside off, it turns away and takes the edge on the forward defence, straight to slip and taken well. Respite for Windies after a session of toil.

Holder to Bairstow, out Bowled!! The sharp in-ducker does the job. The ball nibbled in, Bairstow was cramped on the poky-push and the inside edge shatters the woodwork. It landed well outside off and Bairstow moved towards the line of the ball but left a gap between bat and pad. The ball found the inner edge and disturbed the sticks. Bairstow has a puzzled look on his face as he departs.

On December 3, 2009, Jason Holder won the prestigious Lord Gavron Award for his "cricketing exploits as well as for his general attitude and deportment". The award includes: "A computer, cricket gear and (if possible) an attachment to a cricket club overseas." Roston Chase to Moeen Ali, out Caught by Kraigg Brathwaite!! The flight does the batsman in here. Moeen Ali charged down and tried to go across the line. The ball took the splice of the bat to shoot up and land in the safe hands of the man at backward point. Moeen Ali fails to open his account and Chase has his third. The dryish wicket has finally started to take some turn. The batsman being early into the whippy clip did not help his case.

135.5 W Chase to Cook, OUT, he's finally out! Appeal for lbw as Cook misses his flick at a pretty straight ball, given not out by Erasmus, and the review is called for. Looks pretty close. Has it straightened enough? No edge. It's hitting leg stump and Cook's epic is over

Broad to K Powell, no run, LBW appeal and England review. Fair delivery. No bat involved. Missing leg. Umpire's call on wickets. NOT OUT. Broad isn't happy. The on-field call stays. It was a fullish ball from round the wicket

Ball was in fact clipping leg

Narper 2017-08-19 09:11:02

It's all happening here at Edgbaston! A direct hit and I reckon Powell is short. Well short and OUT is flashed on the giant screen.

17.5
Broad to K Powell, out K Powell Run Out!! This is a disastrous start for the Windies. Suicidal running and Powell pays the price. Short of a good length from round the wicket and Powell offers a a straight bat to push it towards mid-on and takes off for a non-existent single. Anderson, at mid-on, had to only move a couple of yards to his right. Does so and finds the bulls-eye at the bowler's end. Windies: 47-3.

This time, Anderson shortens his length a tad and the ball nips in sharply. All Chase manages to do is hop and get an inside edge. The pink ball cannons onto the stumps. Chase was too late to bring his bat down and that led to his dowfall.

One thing we can say is Blackwood is a TEST batsman.....Shai Hope is not.

39.5
Broad to Roach, out Bowled!! One more. This is a procession now. Broad strikes on his return. The off-stump is cartwheeled out of the ground. A good delivery, on a fullish length, nips back in sharply and moves past the inside edge on the drive and takes out the stump. The seam movement was too much for a tailender like Roach there. Roach b Broad 5(cool [4s-1]

38.3 W Ali to Holder, OUT, caught behind after a review! Another one past the outside edge, and Bairstow is convinced he's nicked it! The review is called for. Moeen certainly wasn't sure. There are spikes on Ultra Edge - although did they quite match up? - and this is overturned! Holder isn't impressed. Bat was nowhere near the ground or the pad. Noise can't have been anything else

Now the opposition has been extended from the original 13, to include the 3rd umpire.

Hope was caught on the shuffle and by the time he got his bat down on the flick, umpire S Ravi's finger was up. Looked close real time, but technology proved that the ball didn't swing/seam much. Moeen Ali to Kraigg Brathwaite, out Lbw!! And tea has been taken as Brathwaite walks back with his head pointing towards the ground. Superb review from England. An off-break from Moeen Ali, Brathwaite doesn't come forward. Instead looks to work it through the on-side from the crease. The ball turns in, beats the inside edge by a long way and strieks Brathwaite's pad in front of middle. He was deep in his crease and hence the ball didn't have much distance to travle. HawkEye shows that it would be hitting leg.

Kraigg Brathwaite lbw b Moeen Ali 40(76) [4s-7]

Moeen Ali to Blackwood, out Stumped!! And, there you go! Second wicket for Moeen Ali and England are five wickets away from the win. They are checking if it's a fair delivery. He has enough behind by the line. And, Blackwood is well out of his crease. Moeen is a smart bowler. He saw Blackwood charge down and wisely shortened his length outside off. Blackwood doesn't put bat on ball and Bairstow does the rest. Collects the ball cleanly and whips off the bails in a flash.

Broad to Roston Chase, out Lbw!! Broad doesn't even bother to appeal. That's an easy one for the umpire. This short of a good length delivery did keep low a bit, but that didn't lead to Chase's downfall. It jagged in sharply and Chase just didn't spot it. Chase brings his bat down, but misses it by a mile. Gets hit on the front leg in front of off. That's hitting off and middle.

Broad to Dowrich, out Bowled!! Stuart Broad goes past Sir Ian Botham to become second in the list of leading wicket takers for England. What.A.Moment. And what a way to do it says Nass on air. Made a mess of the woodwork with a cracker of a nip-backer.

"Very disappointed. We didn't show any fight. Need to work on our lengths when bowling. We got to just believe, we need to counter England's plans. We just need to believe in ourselves, regroup and comeback strong for the next Test. Maybe a bit of nerves on the first day, but a great partnership between Cook and Root took the game away from us. Blackwood is playing his first Test match after quite a while. We have just asked him to be selective and play his natural game. We will look at what changes we should make in the next few days," says Jason Holder.

"Very remarkable day. I thought the way we want about it was excellent. We were ruthless. He had a fantastic career and many more to come. He's got so much left in the tank still. He is very skillfull and got different deliveries. As a whole squad we are finding ways to improve and continue to get better. We have got some runs here. He is an exciting future," says Joe Root.

Poor chap!!! I hope there were tears flowing when he made these remarks...tears for the death of West Indies cricket.

Did Blackwood's shot selection just get blamed for the loss?

Two-day Tests already a reality. WI forging the way to 1-day Tests.

The only thing in the way is the current custom of including a few non-Bim players to appease Caricom. smile

A slight change in nationality and numbers to the cited two day test, eh. I look forward to that day then
