Federer scraped through but his back problems are back. I don't see him going all the way.

Am impressed with Tiafoe's tenacity...

Tiafoe is only 19 years old.

Who said his back problems have returned? He was moving and serving just fine at the end of the 5th set. He's a little rusty and he's probably mindful of the possibility of his back injury returning. He smoked Tiafoe in the 2nd and 3rd set and then went for his usual mental stroll when he looked to have the match all stitched up.

The Canadian, Shapovalov, looks to be the best of the young brigade. And that includes Zverev and Kyrgios.

Youzhny takes Federer to five sets too.

This is the slowest I can recall seeing the US open courts play. Too slow for Federer?

How the frig he rusty and Wimby just end a few weeks ago. Wimby and US Open are the 2 closest and summer tourneys.
He underestimated this kids talent and many at the top do that when they see a kid at the other end. They dont know how much improvement is there after only a year on the tour. Federer himself was one bemoaning players starting Majors knowing they are not fit so aint nothing wrong with him

Wimbledon ended two months ago. In that time he played one tournament and looked out of sorts in each and every match. He injured himself in the final of the Rogers Cup and subsequently pulled out of the tournament in Cincinnati.

He wouldn't have been able to spend much time on the practice courts and probably opted to rest to allow the back injury to fully heal. He just went 5 sets with Youzhny; a man Federer has owned his entire career.

Federer doesn't overlook anyone. If he did, he'd have more "shocking losses" over the course of his career. Fed played Tiafoe in Miami this year and the first set went to a tiebreak. No chance Fed took him for granted. He's simply out of sorts and not playing well.

Federer beat Feliciano Lopez in straight sets

The courts are playing a little faster now and Federer is looking more comfortable.

Apparently some bubbles appeared in the court and they had to resurface it just before the tournament started. The sand in the paint has allegedly been slowing down the ball a bit making it perfect for Nadal in the first week. But the sand has been eroded by the heavy schedule in the first week and the second week the court is now playing a bit more to Federer liking.
