IRMA - Jamaican in Turks and Caicos

KINGSTON, Jamaica — A Jamaican family of 10 in the Turks and Caicos Islands is this evening making a plea to the Government to make provisions for them and other Jamaicans to return home as Hurricane Irma approaches.

Sandra Walker, who lives on Providenciales, the most developed island in the chain, says she wants to get off the island; however they are unable to get a flight out of the country.

Not to make light of their plight, but this appeal to the Jamaican Government is proof that we are a First World country.

She can't get a flight so the JA govt must send an aircraft.

Couldn't get flight for my contingent.

Moved further inland to a good place.

I do have flooding concerns...but hopefully we'll be ok.

First order or business is survival. I may have to send wife and kids away afterwards though...because my work hours will become ahmmmm onerous and not sure what the schools will be like.

'The governor of the Turks and Caicos islands has told the BBC that people in low-lying areas have been moved into shelters as Hurricane Irma sweeps in. John Freeman said extra flights had also been laid on to get as many tourists as possible to safety. "Up until yesterday evening, when the airport closed, we had extra flights moving people out and so we've tried to diminish the numbers here, quite a number have gone to Jamaica," he said. Irma is due to strike the islands in the next few hours.'

Stay safe, Cheeks

The Turks and Caicos islands were hit hard as Irma passed over the tiny archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. A government spokesperson told ABC News the British overseas territory had sustained "catastrophic" damage.

The National Weather Service warned of a storm surge up to 20 feet on Turks and Caicos with 8 to 12 inches of rain for the low-lying islands through Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Bahamas began to experience the extent of Irma's wrath Friday morning. The storm's speed was expected to slow as the core of the hurricane passed between the Bahamas and the northern coast of Cuba.

That's the latest I have seen on T&C and Bahamas as of Friday morning.
